All of these songs are filled with messages to lift and give encouragement to the families and individuals who face physical and mental disabilities. The title song, “Far Different Places,” is based on an article entitled "Welcome to Holland" by Emily Perl Kingsley, first printed in "Dear Abby" in 1984 and reprinted by the National Information Center for Handicapped Children and Youth. It tells of the poignant realizations that come to a couple when they first learn their child will face many difficult challenges. In that moment their lives are changed forever and they see that their life’s journey will take them to far different places than they had ever dreamed. “My Handicapped Child” expresses a mother’s determination to help her child reach her potential now, while feeling hope for some future day when “she’ll rise up well and whole.”
All songs express particular heartaches and hopes that families in these situations experience. “Someday I’ll See” tells of the positive attitudes felt by a blind person who has learned, through other senses, to “see” in dimensions as real as what others may see, while looking forward to that beautiful day when all will be restored. “With Hands of Love” relates the heart-felt wish of those who are deaf to have others care enough to learn to communicate with them “with hands of love.” “Where Has My Mother Gone” gives understanding and comfort to those whose loved one suffers from dementia or Alzheimer’s.
