Details:
The 2009 album "Breaking Through" was the product of so many thoughts and feelings that I’ve been working through over the last two years of my life. Musically it’s quite a change from my first album “Surviving Summer’s Eves”. With life moving as a very quick pace, each song was written very independently of the others, and each song was able to really take on a mind of its own. I started to bring in instruments such as the mandolin and the djembe (a hand drum) and each of those sounds more or less created a new feel for themselves. This album is also a lot more piano driven than anything I’ve done previously, and it ended up giving the project a much more mature feel.

I feel that lyrically this project is leaps and bounds from the last one. While most of “Surviving Summer’s” was a collection of love songs that I had written almost exclusively with one person in mind, “Breaking Through” was an expansion of my understanding of love in general. In particular I began to understand, in a brand new and refreshing way, that the love of God is so much more than anything I’ve ever felt before. This became the focus for my music, as I also used this model to approach other relationships in my life with a new look.

That bigger love is certainly a common theme that runs through the songs on “Breaking Through” but each track also holds it’s own ground to a certain extent. The album opens with the song “Everything”, which is really just a dedication to God. He really is everything that is worth singing about. This is followed by “Bones”, which is kind of a melodramatic song I guess. It talks about the idea of us being just bones, but also the refreshment that comes from knowing that we aren’t supposed to have it all together, and God still loves us so incredibly much. “Breaking Through” was originally not the title track, bur as the story of this album evolved it seemed to fit well in place. It’s really just a love story about a guy who wants to break free of the ordinary to bring something extraordinary back to the one he loves. “Found” is another love story, this one written for the girl of my dreams. It discusses the uncertainty of human emotion and knowing what it feels like to finally find the certainty you’ve been looking for in another’s arms. “Burning Desire” is really just my heart cry to God, that He is the only thing that I really want to yearn for in this life. “Change” is a song that is very close to my heart. It was written for my father at a time when our relationship was really distant and cold. It expresses the change I felt I needed to go through to be acceptable to him, when all along he just wanted what was best for me. I’m really glad to say that God has turned our relationship back around and brought true change for the better. “Lights Away” is a really interesting piece to me. I wrote it during Christmas a few years back, when I was feeling particularly glum with the season. It’s actually about a Christmas tree that gets thrown out the day after Christmas and stripped of the lights and decorations. It made me think about the end of a relationship, and how it often ends up feeling as if we’ve been cast out into the cold and stripped of our light. It concludes that it’s better to sing for the moment and enjoy what you have, and to not weep over the memory when it’s gone. “State Lines” is play on words, that talks about different changes in the state of things, and how that affects our relationships. This is really a closing piece to the love songs of the last album. “Taken” is a really different song musically, because of the rhythm. I really love it, because it proclaims the fact that no matter how much of screw up I am, I always know that God will be waiting for me with open arms. “Blessing” is what I really wanted to say to God, and expresses the whole reason I sing, for the glory of God.

So that’s about it for this one I suppose, I’ll be doing a little local touring Summer 2009 to promote this project, and I’m really excited to see what God is going to do with it, and with me as well!
