Album liner notes by Lance LeRoy:
Born and reared in the largely flat, pineywoods country of east-central Georgia, the young Gillis Brothers, Larry and John, play what might best be described as early 1950''s “mountain bluegrass.” One of fewer than a half dozen nationally-known artists now recording in this pure, early style, the Gillis Brothers and their Hard Driving Bluegrass Band exhibits a fervor and intensity that can come only from heartfelt sincerity and love of the music.
Never have four musicians been assembled with musical tastes more compatible than those of Larry, John, bassist Andy Dye and fiddler Owen Saunders. Together they are filling a vital niche in bluegrass music and in so doing have made the music exciting again for a large and very devoted segment of bluegrass fans - including myself - who are overdosed on the abundance of tasteless hybrid players who run the musical scales but lack the talent and expression of true country jazz players.
“Sunshine In Shadows” is the third CD/cassette project and the first all-gospel issue for the Gillis Brothers. The song material is drawn from sources as diverse as writers with no previous track record to Dottie Rambo, Melba Montgomery, Tennessee’s Looper Trio and the absolutely wonderful Masters Family.
Thank you, Kerry Hay and Hay Holler Records, for once again making possible a collection of unmistakable Gillis Brothers recordings.
