Nashville native, Virginia raised but Holy Ghost redeemed, newcomer Righteous makes his debut with the release of Sword of the Spirit. Available February 21, 2009 on a variety of Internet based stores; this album is a must have in any Gospel music collection. This twelve-track weapon has the beats to make your head bop but more importantly make your flesh stop. With a cool east coast flavor and new Jesus swing, Righteous courageously depicts his own life struggles to encourage others that they too can fight against the tricks of the enemy.
Debating on using his government name or a rap name, Daryl Stevenson Jr. fasted and sought God’s guidance. God honored his request and named him Righteous. “I can’t be righteous on my own, only God can deem one person or another to be Righteous,” he says. Giving his life to Christ at the age of 19, Righteous’ new cause is Christ and spreading the good news through Gospel rap. “…I choose to put Jesus on the track to help somebody get through life’s trials and tribulations.” Not looking for fame or fortune, his music is ministry driven not industry.
Ephesians 6:17 tells us the sword of the spirit is the word of God, which is what you will find in this album. With a mix of deep base lines, bluesy horns, and mellow drum rifts, the music provides the perfect background for worship. Lyrically, Righteous is “hard on the word plays because he is what the word says”. Righteous deals with issues of the heart. There is something for everyone on this project. He lets listeners know that because of the freedom in Christ, you can fight every negative strong hold. The greatness of God is a mystery to most, but because we are his chosen people we will be alright. The Sword of the Spirit not only gives encouragement but it also gives the tools to fight. With tracks such as The Keys, To Seek and to Find, you will receive instruction on how to use your weapon properly. Once reverence is observed with songs like Greater Works and This is Life Man, the praise can begin with joints Getcha Praise On and Flesh versus Spirit.
Featuring members of Nashville based BrotherHood, the Sword of the Spirit has appearances by UnCommon and Midnyte Sun. A majority of the tracks were produced by T- Dogg and DJ Rev. Ange` Bundle also lends her soothing soprano feel to smooth out the edge of this sword.
