Details:
For this CD, we decided to try something a little different. The core trio has been together for quite some time and, for a couple of songs each, we added two of our favorite tenor players from the wonderful cadre of musicians here in the Triangle area of North Carolina. In order to capture the spontaneity and organic feeling of a “live” performance, we skipped the usual studio trappings and set up a location rig in my living room. Almost all of the tracks are first takes and represent the kind of almost telepathic interaction which is at the heart of jazz.
Peter Innocenti, originally from New Jersey , a graduate of the noted jazz program at William Patterson College and a student of Ron Naspo and Rufus Reid, has been with me for three years. His deep, lyrical sound and incredible intuition make him a perfect complement to our repertoire. Jeff Crouse, a native of Newport News, Virginia, came to NC by way of Florida and holds a Masters in Studio Jazz Drumming from the University of Miami where he studied with Steve Rucker. Joining the trio a year ago, his sensitivity, nuance and drive have made him an indispensible colleague.
Ron Baxter has degrees in Jazz from both Northern Illinois University (MA) and North Carolina Central University and has studied and performed with Branford Marsalis. His tone is a unique synthesis of old and new, both warm and acute. Andy Paolantonio is something of a prodigy and has performed professionally since high school. A graduate of Eastern Carolina University and a member of the graduate program at NCCU, his technical virtuosity and breadth of musical knowledge display only a hint of what’s to come.
My own background is a little strange. With almost no formal training I’ve played with some of the most influential and adventurous musicians in the jazz world, including a year with Don Ellis, sharing David Izenzon and Charles Moffett with Ornette Coleman, playing in the “October Revolution in Jazz” with David and Paul Motian, a six am gig in Hollyweird with Rhasaan Roland Kirk and Charlie Haden and a Carnegie Recital Hall concert with Charles Moffett and Barre Phillips. After a diversion into the “pop” world as a song writer and musical director for Mama Cass and Bobby Hatfield, I left the “biz” and spent over a decade as a Psychologist, before returning to my first love, jazz.
The title of this CD is both accurate and ironic since some of the tunes are “hot off the presses,” while others are almost as old as the Eagle Nebula pictured on the cover. The cloud-like formations are called the Pillars of Creation – stars are born there. I hope the reference is apt.
