Details:
''The debut EP from MrBarnabus and The Cosmic Rebellion is a 30 minute sonic journey that takes listeners through a rather eclectic array of styles while managing to remain true to the funk and to the Cosmic Rebellion sound; tracks like ''Method/Madness and ''The Game'' may evoke artists such as Eminem and the Marley clan, while ''Platypus Dance'' and "Epilogue'' are jammy instrumentals more reminiscent of Santana, Phish or even Pink Floyd. Meanwhile the single ''Into The Light'' is a short and bouncy Funk rock adrenaline rush, with a catchy chorus and 90''s alt rock vocals to boot. But amidst the vacillating musical personas, each track is tied to the next by the solidly funky rhythm section and dazzling virtuosity of the band in general. Scorching keyboard and guitar solos from MrBarnabus soar over the remarkably nimble bass work of John David and Miller''s persistently groovy pocket: it''s not hard to tell that this group cut their teeth as a jam band playing 2 hour long improvised sets; don''t be surprised if this funky and fun half-hour''s worth leaves you wanting more.''

HISTORY

I.

MrBarnabus and The Cosmic Rebellion began at the California Institute of the Arts in early 2004, as an eight piece Funk cover band that would later morph into one of the most inventive and daring musical releases of 2009. Producer Sam Lustig explains how MrBarnabus is more than merely a band name or pseudonym:

“I think of MrBarnabus as an inexhaustible source of pure creative energy...an infinite ocean of artistic ideas and inspiration... my job is to take what washes up on the shores of that ocean and help bring it into form, which could mean anything, artistically...In this case it happened to be a Funk band with a female vocalist and a four piece horn section.”

Rather than focus on original material, Lustig, a fourth year composition student, limited the band''s set to original arrangements of semi-obscure tunes from the 70''s funk catalog.

“At Calarts I had been churning out original material non-stop for four years; the band was started as a vacation from that and as a way to pay homage to some of my favorite Funk tunes. There were never even guitar solos in the early shows; the only expression of MrBarnabus was in the arrangements and the spontaneous jams. It was really about eight people who loved the Funk, getting together in a room to play some great songs”

The musicians were handpicked from the college''s prestigious school of Music, and the set included B-sides from the likes of Stevie Wonder, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, Aretha Franklin, Sly and the Family Stone, and others, all infused with epic, jammed out solo sections featuring the top notch horn line-up.

II.

In the summer of 2005 the group recorded “Play That Funky Music”, “Rocksteady” and “Do Your Thing” at Studio 800, in Pacific Palisades, California; The demo led to several notable, albeit sporadic shows around Los Angeles, including The Temple Bar, The Key Club, and the Calarts Halloween party. But despite the obvious chemistry of the band and enthusiastic crowds, the strains of organizing what was essentially an eight piece side project kept this ''Big Band'' version of the group from gaining consistent momentum.

Meanwhile the rhythm section of the group had begun to attract attention on the Calarts scene by spinning totally improvised, instrumental, highly dance-able funk jams in a trio format which included Ira Miller on drums and John David Lipscomb on bass, with MrBarnabus fueling guitar and keyboards. Billed as The Cosmic Rebellion, the group would provide the soundtrack for numerous late night Calarts functions; always instrumental, and always completely off the cuff. Lustig remembers:

“We NEVER knew what was going to be played, which is what made it exciting and somewhat magical. The closest we ever had to songs were little riffs and motifs that would sometimes resurface, but never the same way twice.”

The success of these impromptu performances led the group to return to Studio 800 in early 2007, where engineer Marc Viner would attempt to capture with authenticity this funky, extemporaneous music that was drawing droves of curious art students to the dance floor. These sessions laid the groundwork for what would later become the long awaited, eponymous five song EP, completed in late 2008.

III.

Shortly after the rhythm sections were tracked, Lipscomb left the project to devote more time to L.A. based rock ensemble “Carney” and producers Lustig and Miller elected to take a hiatus from performing and return to the studio to complete The Cosmic Rebellion record. Over the next year and a half, hours of improvised material were whittled down and fleshed out into four highly eclectic tracks, melding Hip Hop, Dub, Funk and Jam band influences. The song list would be rounded out with the MrBarnabus original “Into The Light”, the only cut not assembled from the improvised jams.

“It was pretty unorthodox” says Lustig of their approach to the record: “And I think that''s what makes the music so fresh and unique. In some ways it has strayed pretty far from the original format of the group, yet the roots, and the Funk are still there. It manages to capture the magic of all that improv inside the structured compositions, which is really what we were going for.”

Now with the EP completed, MrBarnabus and The Cosmic Rebellion are hard at work reassembling their forces and planning their upcoming CD release party in Los Angeles, to be followed by a brief tour and a second, full-length album in 2010.
