Tunes Fer Yer Head, recorded by Tom Demarest in Corvallis, Oregon, is James Wilson’s second solo CD project. The tunes in this collection are all instrumentals in classical guitar, acoustic guitar, bouzouki, tin whistle, and a bit o’ bodhran on Chavita’s Jig. Four of the tunes were written while James spent a year in the wonderful music community of Corvallis, Oregon. This year, after an escape from Southern California, James was able to take his instruments out of their cases and play. He played at Linn-Benton College, The Benton Center, The Corvallis Art Center, the Corvallis Artisans’ Market, and was a Sunday brunch denizen regularly playing at ZIA restaurant in Downtown Corvallis. He also played and recorded with Poitin and Stout, raucous Irish music, out of Corvallis.
James has since moved to Sacramento, California for job-related reasons, but he continues to play Celtic, original, and classical music. He regularly visits Corvallis and maintains connections with that community and his musical friends in Poitin and Stout. He now plays mandolin and tin whistle in Sacramento’s BlackEyed Dempseys who had their debut at Ireland’s 32 Irish Pub in San Francisco, California. Chavita’s is a jig written for James’s nephew, played on tin whistle and bodhran, and has some of his bouncing energy (If only he would do his math homework!). Peter Street is an Irish reel fingerpicked on steel-string guitar. Soldier’s Joy is played on bouzouki as is Turlough O’Carolan’s Southwind. Haste to the Wedding, an Irish jig, is finger-picked on classical guitar. Morrison’s is played on bouzouki (and he would really like to get another take at it). Devil Among the Tailors and Atholl Highlanders are two traditional Scottish tunes played on bouzouki. Danny Boy here was arranged for flute solo. My Lodging’s in the Cold, Cold Ground is a new arrangement on classical guitar and brings out some of its lovely melody. Trip to Sligo is finger-picked on steel-string guitar. The Legacy of Leith, a tune written by James, is played on classical guitar. It has some haunting melody reminiscent of the place outside Edinburgh where the ancestral Wilsons came to County Mayo, Ireland. The Alman by the Renaissance composer Robert Johnson (yes, there is another) is a classical piece from the time in the mid-1980’2 when James played in a classical guitar ensemble. The guitar classic Romanza is a standard piece and is dedicated to James’s wife Lucia. The two last pieces were written by James, played on classical guitar, and dedicated to the wonderful music community of Corvallis, Oregon. These are stripped-down versions of musical pieces for anybody who enjoys a good tune.
