MP3 Enchanted Ape - Three Ring Symphony

Organic roots rock

10 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Jam-band, POP: Folky Pop

Details:
With its new album, Three Ring Symphony, Enchanted Ape bridges the gap between jam band and rock band, using equal parts improvisation and orchestration. An array of carefully-crafted songs are set free to develop organically, elevating the music to dramatic peaks that can only be achieved by taking chances.

The band''s music originates from acoustic folk and blues, but if you''ve seen them live, you know they are anything but traditional. Tribal percussion, wailing slide guitar and electric cello all contribute to the group''s dynamic performances. Described as passionate, unpredictable and downright freaky, Enchanted Ape tears into its material with unbridled enthusiasm night after night.

A prime example of the band''s willingness to "let the music go where it needs to go," is the strange recording process that spawned Three Ring Symphony. "We originally intended to record the whole album live in the studio," explains singer/songwriter Chris O''Brien. "However, the band evolved so much during the course of the project, we had to adapt and make sure the final product represents who we are now."

Enchanted Ape started its live-in-studio recording project in September of 2004, but plans changed several months later when drummer Chad Turner moved to Costa Rica on an open-ended hiatus. What began then as a search for a replacement drummer yielded three new permanent band members who each contributed to the album.

Using the original live tracks as a basis for the recording, new layers of percussion, vocals and strings were painstakingly added to each song. The result is a polished, richly-textured album that still feels raw and impulsive, like anything could happen.

For the members of Enchanted Ape, the new CD serves as extra motivation to expand and hone the live shows that have earned them a growing legion of fans. "Onstage is the one place where we''re truly comfortable," Chris says. "All the time we put into recording, traveling, promoting shows and everything else is so that we can get up in front of an audience and let something happen that''s bigger than us. That''s the beauty of music. It''s a force with a mind all its own."
