G. Owen Smith is one of the new breed of talented self-produced indie songwriter/recording artists that are developing in these days of computer technology and digital recording. Working at his home studio near Bellingham, Washington, G. Owen likes to build his songs around solid melodies and thoughtful lyrics, flavored with a unique guitar style, and spiced with an assortment of occassional harmonies and other instruments.
Often employing 10 or more self-recorded tracks, G. Owen crafts each tune by layering his guitar and bass over a basic drum beat, then adding keyboard or other digital sounds, along with a final drum track, one at a time before laying down his vocals.
"I really enjoy doing harmonies with myself," he says with a smile, "although I have to be a little careful about which key I choose for the song so I don''t hurt myself trying to reach some of those higher notes."
After listening to his debut CD, "Watch The Colors Play," G. Owen''s genre bending tunes are not always easy to pin down. Melodic rock blends with elements ranging from modern folk, to bluegrass, to country. Although most often about relationships, they are tinged with emotions ranging from humor to an almost pagan spiritual tone. His sometimes haunting, yet often uplifting, lyrics delve into some of the more unexplored nooks and cranies of human feelings that leave his listeners thinking about the words long after the song is over.
G. Owen Smith can occassionaly be heard playing live with local bands in the Northwest Interior region of Washington State.
