"I never went to Vietnam. A lot of my friends did. They got drafted and I didn''t. It was as simple as that. What the hell did we know? We were 17 and 18 year old boys. When they came back (the ones that did), they had aged 30 years while I had only aged 16 months. Sometimes I feel guilty because I didn''t go and sometimes I feel lucky. When I think of the horrible grief that ruined the lives of the parents of my dead buddies, I remember thinking that if giving up my life would''ve brought their son back, I would have done so in a second!I''ve heard people say ''Why can''t we just leave this whole Vietnam thing behind us?'' The reason we can''t is because when you forget the lessons that history gas tried to teach you, you have to learn them all over again. Once was enough!
Matt''s storyis on the inside, and I have never witnessed any work of fiction in either book or film that could even come close to his real life experience"
