Details:
Jarring, dissonant, cleansing, playful, joyous, claustrophobic, breathing, fun.
Bird language. Gathers energy in color. Connection with sounds, objects, others. Comfort; anxieties hidden in faraway places come to the fore and vanish. Movement of lunatics.

I''m a composer and improvisor. So are the collaborators on the ''Round About Saturn project. I''m not an expert on the workings of the brain, but I think music comes from a different part of it than words do. Seems true to me; I''m pretty tongue-tied when it comes to talking about the musical process. For me, when music-making is actually happening it''s like being in the midst of something; a storm, or a nuclear explosion; like being in a dream-state, or in a sea of pulsating something-or-other-ness.

Pretty hard to describe. Feelings and images and sounds and waves converge, intersect, cross, connect, link up, coincide, join, unite, merge, diverge, separate, leave, split, fork, divide, bifurcate, deviate, digress, depart, veer, stray. Something like that. But I do want to attempt to say something cogent about ''Round About Saturn. Have to warn you, though, that this may be more like dancing about architecture—as Thelonious Monk said—than talking about music.

One of the great things about music is how it''s a bridge between the seen and the unseen. Music opens the soul to unity and oneness; it opens the heart to being centered in the moment. When the connection is made to the direct flow of music and it starts roaring through one''s heart to the brain and bones and blood and breath becomes sound, becomes light and the world starts shimmering like a painted veil.... Music bathes the body, mind, and soul as it washes over—it purifies us.

Architecturally, the music on ''Round About Saturn is influenced by the writings of the Perennial Wisdom, from those of the ancient Persian, Egyptian, Vedic, and European civilizations down to their counterparts in the twenty-first century. According to the wisdom traditions, rhythm existed at the beginning of time. It''s the absolute creator of the worlds and their inhabitants. It is the essence of the universe, the hidden pulse that runs through everything. It''s the irresistible point of contact and of participation of man with nature.

Sound being the carrier wave of divine will, as the wisdom traditions say, music is an agent of world transformation. Sounds of the music of the future: frog ribbets, bear growls, planetary shifts, primal cries, burps and hiccups, landscape convulsions, snorts and chirps, trance-inducing rhythms. Ecstatic music. I''m exploring ways to organize sound. At one point I discovered that when I thought of tone as having infinite gradations, rising and/or falling—like light, brighter and dimmer, a zone of exploration became available.

Elements used on ''Round About Saturn include the sounds of nature; American song form and extended blues traditions; North, Central, and South American folk music; the music of Persia and the Middle East; the Asian, African, European, and American Indian traditions; and the Western European Art Music experimental and concert traditions. I''m drawn to the universal aspects and expressions common to these elements—the foundation of which is authenticity—and the product of which is the language of the heart.

The CD ''Round About Saturn reflects energy, exploration, aspiration, and the possibilty of music to transform the mundane episodes of everyday life into luminous lusterous moments of jewel-like beauty.

Music has been called the language of the heart. ''Round About Saturn is the result of hearts coming together to celebrate the spirit of oneness and unity. Bill McCord, Carmen Baraka, Victor Behm, Don Baraka and I present this music as an offering of love and hope—for today, tomorrow, and the future.
