Songwriting is something I couldn’t stop doing if I tried. Whether it starts at the piano, the guitar, with a word or idea, it just happens. So much great music inspires me and so many great artists have influenced me that it would be ridiculous and prohibitively time-consuming to try to narrow them all down to just a few hundred. Plus, I go through stages. One week I might listen to only Louis Armstrong, the next week I might listen to just Elliott Smith. It could be Tom Waits, or the Ink Spots or Mahler or The Shins or XTC or Earth, Wind, and Fire or Elvis Presley or Led Zeppelin or John Coltrane or Kurt Weill. Or Rufus Wainwright or Bright Eyes or Ray Charles or Tom Petty or Nirvana or Billie Holiday or Sly and the Family Stone or Feist or Monk or the Meters. So, I like a lot of stuff. When writing lyrics I strive for honesty, poetry, a twist or surprise sometimes, and good sounding words. Someone once asked me, “How long do you think you’ll be doing this?” “For the rest of my life,” was the only answer imaginable.
I''ve been doing music all my life: Performances and recordings with – Janet Jackson, Paul Simon, William Hart Strecker, Julia Darling, Rene Lopez, The Annapolis Symphony, Slo Leak, David Johansson, and lots of others. Broadway – Smokey Joe’s Café (including the Grammy winning cast recording), Movin’ Out, Riverdance, and some off-Broadway stuff too. I’ve written music for television - Inside Edition, Oprah, NBC Sports, Guiding Light and more. I’ve also played on many commercials and played several instruments (woodwinds, guitar, harmonica, toys) on programs for National Geographic and Discovery. I’ve played in dives, Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and a Presidential Inaugural. Songs for "Twice The Animal" were written in 2008 and 2009.
