''Toucan Do It Too'' comes together in a natural flowing manner, one song after/to another, culminating in a well coordinated package that will surely establish Minan''s versatility as a songwriter who stays in touch with her roots, that which has gone before, while taking as bold a step as possible in a new direction that could, I suppose, be referred to as the shape of things to come (or the shape of things that could come, or the shape of things to be discovered). Now, that sounds good, perhaps even a bit profound, intense or... YEAH, YEAH, YEAH... whatever, doesn''t it? But, in regards to this new recording of Minan''s what does it actually mean?
It means absolutely nothing at all aside from the fact that it is designed to (hopefully) capture your attention enough to ''entice'' you into wanting to give the streaming audio demos on this particular CD Baby page a listen. After all, it is with an extreme measure of measured confidence that I assert that the songs themselves will say a heck of a lot more than any of the rhetorical nonsense and gibberish I can come up with to hype this new CD.
Hype is hype but, in the end, if the music itself cannot and does not measure up, the hype is and would be simply a compilation of meaningless wasted words.
God knows I cannot keep Minan from the piano and, when a new song is born,Great how she just throws herself (with gusto, passion, and excitement) into the recording process. These are, after all, her songs, songs that definitely do mean something to herself, which, I suppose, is what accounts for the ''presence'' that I can only describe as the character and personality of an artist who says, in a very human way, what she means and means what she says.
Warmth, sincerity, and sensitivity is what comes through the mix and it''s almost as if Minan were singing, not (through a microphone) to a recording console, but directly to whomever is going to listen to the album being made. The end result is often a spontaneous performance that I, as engineer and producer, try, to the best of my ability, not to "mess around with" more than is actually necessary.
''Toucan Do It Too'' can be referred to as electronically produced (pop) music merging with techno, but, in truth, the traditional elements are very much there, and a listen to the jazz flavored song, "TREES", will, I am sure, establish the fact that the androids did not have much of a say in the final production. Neither did they have much to do with the new age flavored loneliness of the moody "THE RETURN". It is true, however, that, on "(I''ll Be) Hanging Around With You", the android choir (a soft synth called ANGELINA) was given free rein, but, even here, they were restrained, not permitted to intrude and therefore had to settle down in the background where they performed just nicely. A bit of a reggae feel rolls "Toucan Do It Too" (the title song) right along. Later, in "THE NATURAL FLOW", a bit of a ''Cat Stevens'' influence crept in, but he was nowhere around, so, I have to wonder (not) how on earth he did that? I don''t know! It just came out that way. Now, consider this: If a picture is worth a thousand words, then, what is the worth of a song well written?
