October 28, 2005: Just a quick thank you to all of you who''ve purchased the CD as part of the Hurricane Katrina relief (Red Cross). The fundraiser was an extremely successful one. I''m grateful to all the new listeners and am looking forward to the next release in Summer 2006. *bows humbly* ~Jimm

On his first solo release, since his departure from the Byron Nemeth Group (BNG), keyboardist, composer, songwriter, and arranger, Jimm Motyka takes his instrumental style into another direction with his latest release, Subject & Predicate. While he enjoyed writing and performing with BNG, he felt there were a number of songs written that would develop differently outside the structure of the group. Therefore, he ventured on to his current solo release.

Motyka explains the CD title and concept, "We are the subject to everything in our lives. The predicate refers to the things that occur to the subject. Most may recognize these terms from their English classes, but they seem to have a crossover to every day life. How ironic is it that our sentences, and how we express ourselves, always contain a subject and an action that acts on the subject. That''s how I view life. Things are always happening to us. Life is unavoidable."

Motyka''s passion has always been about music and the pursuit of creating music. From an early age, Motyka''s goal was centered on writing and playing rather than just playing the music of others. Motyka admits that early on he would create his own songs by playing the chord structures of Beatles'' songs in reverse, from the end to the beginning of the song.

Motyka''s keyboardist beginning stems back to the first instrument he learned how to play: the organ. Motyka admits that he plays the piano like an organ, but it is that sound which makes him stand apart from the other artists in the solo piano genre. The transition to piano was one that occurred naturally; one which took Motyka from organ to keyboard (once termed synthesizer) to piano. Motyka adds that he loved the feel and the emotion of the sound of a piano.

With a sense of neo-classical overtones, which meld classical, pop, jazz, and progressive rock. Motyka jokes that his "classical music" is Styx, Kansas, ELO, Alan Parsons Project, Elton John, and the Moody Blues. He typically tells people that he''s not classically trained, but calls himself "classic rock" trained.

While going to Cuyahoga Falls High School, Motyka mentions that he and his friends used to sneak into parts of the school that had a piano and would play it for his friends during lunch. But, it was David Lanz who became the next major influence when Motyka discovered Lanz''s "Return To The Heart". Motyka recalls, "Hearing that release changed everything for me. I would listen to it all the time. I was amazed that someone was creating piano music outside the envelope of mainstream music at that time. And, that people of many age groups were listening to this person. I had hoped that the music I was creating could actually garner an audience."

Half of the songs on Subject & Predicate have been tested in local coffeehouses. Motyka admits that the intimacy of the coffeehouses allowed him to hone his music more and get a sense for what was happening. It was a barometer of what was or wasn''t working. That personal sense is what has been included in this release.

So, sit back, light a few candles, have a cup of tea or a glass of wine, and enjoy the music of Jimm Motyka''s Subject & Predicate.
