Jah Elect is a fresh, new voice in music, whose future is full of potential to refashion the reggae music scene. Elect uses what some would consider weaknesses to position himself as a paradigm shifter: someone who doesn’t approach his craft following the traditional structures and patterns. His journey into the realm of music was a long, winding one. Never a formally trained musician, Elect has used his experiences with various cultures and his heavy influence from a wide-range of musical tastes to create a sound uniquely his.
Jah Elect’s strongest attribute is his writing ability, and it is indeed this craft that he began mastering the earliest while still a youth in Jacksonville, Florida. He has been writing stories, poems, and lyrics from the tender age of 8. After high school, he yearned to venture out own his own, and attended DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. There he began breaking down his fears of performing publicly, practicing his still developing skills primarily as a spoken word artist.
While in Chicago, Elect also greatly expanded his mind spiritually and socially, and embraced a message of social justice, truth and equality, and self-empowerment. He was fortunate enough during this time to travel to Ghana, West Africa where he deepened his historical perspective and spiritual enlightenment. It was at this time that Elect first came to love reggae music, and soon there after the next chapter in his odyssey would begin.
After the birth of his son, Elect came home to Florida where he began to actually record music with local artists in Jacksonville. He knew his art needed to be developed to another level however, and he enrolled at Full Sail Real World Education in Orlando, Florida. Over the next two years he received a crash course in music production, promotion, and theory. He graduated with his Bachelor’s degree in October of 2006.
This was also the birth of Zion’s Garden Entertainment, which saw Elect combine with artists Asya and King Thayo to form the powerful trio One A.R.T. Since then Elect has worked with artists including Hawaiian singer Kana, and Tampa’s Badda Skat. He has laid the foundation with his core followers, who patiently await the day his abilities are fully recognized. That day is expected to come in 2008 with the release of his debut album, American Yard. Whether he receives international acclaim or remains an underground legend, Jah Elect is sure to leave a lasting impact on the future of music.
