Singer, guitarist and songwriter Scott Perkins taps deep into his soulful blues-rock roots for his second CD, “Palm Trees in Da Keweenaw,” released in April, 2008. Recorded in Scott’s Houghton, Michigan studio, the CD takes its title from the Keweenaw Peninsula (pronounced “Key wee naw”), the northernmost tip of the state jutting into Lake Superior. “Keweenaw’s inspiring natural scenery and lively music scene have nurtured my continuing evolution as a musician,” says Perkins. “The new CD gave me an opportunity to delve into my love of traditional blues as well as expressing some of the most current issues of our time in my songs ''Global Warming'' and ''Brothers in This Land.''"
The CD encompasses many musical forms and has a variety that makes listening a pleasure, from the driving beat of “Devil’s Hand” to the haunting waltz “How Many Times.” The complexity and wonder of human relationships is explored in “Standing in the Rain,” “Goodbye Never Came” and “Walk Away from You.” Fans of Scott’s instrumentals will be happy to hear his latest offerings in this genre: “Steppin’ In,” “Country Time” and “Summer Daze,” all featuring the guitar showmanship that has attracted so many loyal listeners over the years.
“My goal for the CD was to take my music to a higher level in terms of both quality and content,” says Perkins. “ As a musician I am always striving to stretch and grow. I was able to achieve a great sound and owe a lot of that to my collaboration with P.J. Olsson.” Olsson, a CBS recording artist and well-respected audio engineer, was a valued participant in the mixing and mastering process, helping to shape “Palm Trees in Da Keweenaw.” “He enjoyed the island feel of the Global Warming song so much that he volunteered to do some backing vocals for the track,” Perkins notes. “We had a lot of fun working on the entire project.”
Perkins is looking forward to a number of live performances in the coming months. “It’s always interesting and exciting to bring new songs to my audiences at concerts and festivals. The live performances add a whole new dimension to the music,” says the BMI artist.
