The Cutlers Of Cornwall
“One and All”
For hundreds of years, Cornish folk, after a hard days work, would head for the local Public House, drink a beer and break into song, These songs were often varied, some singing of times past, Some exulting pride in their land of Cornwall, often Cornwall’s strong Methodist influence would be reflected and hymns were sung in full four part harmony, strong themes were tragedy, Love, Religion and some good old fashioned humour. One and all is a snapshot of some of these popular songs.
Lamorna relates to the small fishing port of Lamorna, perched between Penzance and Lands End, This is the tale of a man who thinks he is meeting up with a new girl, to find that this girl is in fact his wife. Ouch!
Let The Lower Lights reflects Cornwall’s relationship with the sea, and the perils it might bring, it also has a strong religious significance, may the light safely guide us all. The Breeches Buoy was invented in Cornwall, and our lifeboat men are revered the world over for the many lives they have saved.
Railroad, Richard Trevithick of Camborne invented the Steam Railway Engine, Google Richard Trevithick, and you will be amazed. The song I’ve been working on the railroad is sung the world over. And never with more gusto, than here in Cornwall, the birthplace of the railway.
Faraway Is a new composition, many years ago, the Cornish mines fell on hard times, life was hard and poverty rife. Indeed for many life had become murky, But Cornish people being what they are, and with unmatched skills in hard rock mining, travelled the world in search of work, wherever there was a hole in the ground, it was said a Cornish miner would be at the bottom of it, this song reflect the thoughts in the hearts of those stood looking out to sea for the last time in Cornwall, prior to leaving for a new life in America, Canada, Australia, Africa, South America, indeed anywhere in the world where their skills would be required.
Little Lize and Camborne Hill Are traditional songs the former telling of love, and the latter… well have a listen and make your own mind up.
The White Rose One of the most popular songs sung in Cornwall, It tells of love and loss, his wife had rosy cheeks, but they grew paler, and he was left alone to weep and mourn his loss.
Silver Dollar and Abie Very popular over a glass of “Betty Stoggs” as it was over a pint of Devonish,
The Miners Wife, When a miner was killed or severely injured, his family often became destitute, The mine owners would order that the doors and windows were removed form the tied cottage, in order to speed the eviction of his family. Often to the workhouse where the would live in poverty and die paupers.
Cornish Lads, was written by Roger Bryant of Redruth, and the words written on the wall outside of Cornwall’s last Tin Mine, when the news broke of its closure bringing to a temporary end four thousand years of mining in Cornwall. It is said that as the words were being written on the wall, two policemen arrived, saying nothing they read the words, looked at the writer, then they climbed back into their police car and drove away. No words were spoken, but everyone knew.
Hail To The Homeland, Written by Kenneth Pelmeor of Carharrack. Had it not been for Trelawney, this could have become a national anthem.
Gisson is a bit of fun, and deals with two words often used in Cornwall, “Gisson” and “Dreckly” have a listen and it won’t be long before you are using them too.
Lily Of The Valley, Again, this song reflects Cornwall’s long relationship with Christianity. St Piran is our patron saint, it is said that he came from Ireland where an attempt was made on his life, in a storm, he was tied to a millstone, and thrown from a cliff into the sea below. Then the miracle happened, the storm stopped, the sea became calm, the stone floated and three days later he washed up on the beach near Perranporth. He is celebrated every year on March 5th “St Pirans Day”
Old Grey Duck Tells a sad story, but with a light hearted melody. Often sung in the pubs of Cornwall.
Country Life Draws attention to the perceived difference in the quality of life that we now enjoy here in Cornwall against that of a city dweller. Cornwall is a wonderful land, the fourth Celtic nation, Google Cornwall UK, read all about this fascinating land, I think that you will easily find an explanation for the love of this land found in every Cornishman’s heart. And perhaps you to will feel that love and come and visit this “land of the saints”
Trelawney What better song to end this CD with, our national anthem, written many years ago by the Rev Hawker. Trelawney reflects our troubled times fighting off Aristocratic English oppression. For years we have been robbed of our identity. Our history hidden and our language banned. Our minerals and bounty plundered. But the Cornish heart is strong. And will persevere, Thank you for taking the time to read this. If nothing else, I hope that it will raise a curiosity in you to know more about the beloved land of Cornwall, it’s history and the fine people that it spawned.
