MP3 The Utards - Monkey Junk

A bit like taking your favorite ''80s hardcore 45s and playing them back at 33 rpm, and realizing they sound pretty good that way too - but not as good as Irish drinking songs, which are, of course, the best songs.

5 MP3 Songs
ROCK: Hard Rock, ROCK: Psychedelic

Details:
Mike stands. Check. Extra strings. Check. Earplugs? Somewhere. Green bag full of cords and make. Check. Twelve-pack? Backseat. Practice is a go, and the ritualistic packing and unpacking of the Nissan mini-truck goes off without a hitch. And yet there will still be a problem. There''s always a problem. Forty-two seconds after the opening E chord of "Utopian Dream," the problem, hardly an unfamiliar one, rears its ugly head.

"Kyle, did you get some disco lights or something?"

"No. Cops again."

And with that, another Utards practice comes to an unceremonious close, thanks to geriatric neighbors and the "efficiency" of the Pima County Sheriff''s Office. "This sucks. When will we be able to get into that tool shed behind the grocery store?"

"Working on it."

Formed in 2003, The Utards'' music rings more familiar in the ears of Tucson-area law enforcement officers than in the ears of Tucson-area rock fans. Nonetheless, the ''Tards soldier on, practicing in sheds, garages, and back bedrooms citywide - until complaints necessitate a change of venue. Luckily, local bars and clubs have been a bit more tolerant, perhaps due to the copious quantities of alcohol consumed by fans at Utards shows. The Utards'' debut EP "Monkey Junk," foisted on an unsuspecting public at large on 16 November 2004, features what would be about nine solid minutes of ''80s-styled hardcore, except performed somewhat more slowly so that the disc actually plays out over about sixteen minutes. If this appeals to you, pick up a copy of "Monkey Junk" - if enough people do so, perhaps the ''Tards will finally find their way out of your next-door neighbor''s garage currently being used as a practice space.
