Details:
Jeff "Xero Flows" Welch is a Christian Hip-Hop artist from Jonesborough TN. After forsaking his Christian roots in his teen years and turning to a life of crime and drugs he returned to the Lord thanks to the wonderful grace of God and the persistent prayers of his family. Now He desires to spread the same message of hope that saved his life by presenting the Gospel of Jesus Christ through Hip-Hop music. Jeff Welch was born on Lakeland Air Force Base in San Antonio TX. He and his younger brother were raised by a single mother and moved frequently until he was about seven years old when they settled in the Tri-Cities area of east TN and his mother re-married a devout Christian man. Jeff and his brother were adopted by there mothers new husband and he raised them as if they were his own. Xero was home schooled for religious reasons and graduated from high school at the age of 15. While he certainly received a fantastic education, Xero was socially stunted and never felt like he “fit in” with the people his age who attended public schools. This lead to severe shyness, depression, and anxiety and made him feel out of place in almost every situation. As a teen, Xero rebelled against his adoptive fathers strict Christianity and eventually blamed his social and mental problems on both. The rebellion was fierce, and lead to drug use, self mutilation, promiscuous sex, crime, and an atheism that never completely believed there was not a God, but despised the very idea of one. Xero claimed he believed there was not a “God“, but he still spent every moment hating the very thing that he insisted did not exist! During this time Xero spent a lot of time studying Buddhism and other eastern/new age philosophies because, for some reason, he knew that there had to be more to life then the way he was living. He was sure however, that it was not Biblical Christianity. Partly for money and partly just to take his rebellion to the next level, Xero began robbing houses and cars. This went on for a while, but eventually he was caught and convicted of twelve theft related felonies. At the age of 18 Xero was locked up in a maximum security facility for a brief time before being released onto 1 year of house arrest and 4 years of parole. While he was on house arrest, Xero made a strong effort to “clean his life up” by staying drug and alcohol free the whole time, and even got accepted to Collage towards the end of his time under the strict supervision. Unfortunately, as soon as he was transferred to the much more loosely supervised parole department, Xero was right back on drugs and drinking and after two semesters and one A in English, he was out of school as well. During this period, Xero became deeply involved in music. He had always loved music and even played the guitar but he had only been in a couple of very unsuccessful metal bands, Robot Jesus, as a guitarist and Naked Rage as a vocalist. Xero had never made hip-hop music before but after meeting Haney while the two worked at a restaurant, he joined the group “Lost Souls” and his rap career began. Also around this time, Xero’s brother introduced him to a metal group looking for a singer. Xero auditioned, and the band Caste was born. Over the next couple of years Xero worked on both projects and played countless live shows. In 2000 Xero was married to Melissa, who he had met over a year earlier when she came to a show Caste was putting on at the place where they rehearsed. Melissa would occasionally make Xero go to church with her even though she was not where she needed to be with the Lord ether. Xero prided himself on being “open-minded” far to much to refuse to go but he hated every minute of it. Caste broke up but Xero continued to rap for a while even after the birth of his first daughter, Jade, in 2001. Eventually Xero quit rapping as well and decided to give up on music altogether, or so he thought. After some time away from music, Xero was persuaded to join a metal band called god’s Last Name who’s drummer had been the drummer in Caste. This new band was phenomenal and played a lot of shows out of town and practiced almost every night that they did not have a show. This put a great deal of stress on Xero’s marriage While Xero was in god’s Last Name, his father began to give him book’s on the topic of Christian Apologetics, which is a rational defense of the Christian faith. Once again Xero’s “open-mindedness” would be his down fall and he actually read the books his father was bringing. Xero had always considered himself a “seeker”. He knew there was truth out there and he just had to find it. As he read his fathers books he realized that he had found the truth in the one and only place that he did NOT want it to be, Christianity! Xero Flows asked Christ to be the Lord of his life as he walked around in circles in his back yard. Soon after, god’s Last Name broke up and Xero was certain he was done with music now! In 2004 Melissa had the couples second daughter, Darcy, and Xero became very active as a member of they’re church. He also studied God’s word and Christian Apologetics tirelessly. Then, in 2005, Haney called. Haney wanted Xero to record a CHRISTIAN hip-hop album! Xero had never even heard a CHRISTIAN hip-hop album but he really felt like this was what God was leading him to do. Xero began to write and all of the things that he had been studying just started pouring out onto the page and eventually onto the mic. The result was Xero Flows debut album “REALigious”. After selling many, many copies of the REALigious album Xero Flows and Haney are back at it again, working on Xero’s second album and getting ready for some very big things that God is going to do in the near future! Xero Flows lives in Jonesborough TN with his wife Melissa and his daughters, Jade and Darcy. He is a member of Boone Trail Baptist Church. Xero Flows is now available for live performances in the NE TN, SW VA area. Perfect for any size youth group.
