ERIC PAISLEY BIO
Born September 9, 1963, the fourth of six children, Eric Paisley (real name Norbert Saric) grew up in humble circumstances in the historic town of Lüneburg (Germany). Eric’s life was always filled with music. At home, the record player or the radio was always on. He was given his first guitar for Christmas when he was five years old. From then on, he played and practiced whenever he could. Eric often sang for friends, family and neighbors. It was as important to him then as it is now to let other people share in his love for music and give them pleasure. His enthusiasm for tuneful, lyrical songs still remains today. A sensitive boy, he was very much influenced by his first years in a strict Catholic school. After he changed schools, he took guitar classes for the first time, in 5th grade – a truly wonderful experience. After that, every cent was saved, and, of course, invested in a new guitar. His favorite musicians were Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash. He would sit in front of the record player, sound out the chords and basically teach himself to play the guitar. In both easy and difficult times, the songs of Elvis or Patsy Cline were a special source of calm, peace and confidence, and of fun and joie de vivre, in equal measure. He used them to express himself particularly intensely when he played and sang at school and on many special occasions. He was therefore very affected and moved by Elvis’ sudden death. In 1978, Eric formed his own school band, with his brother Mike (bass guitar) and friends. They played and sang oldies and pop music, and soon became the most sought-after musicians in town. After the all-too-early loss of his father in 1982, Eric put even more energy into his music and performances: nothing was more important to him than his wish to earn a living from music some day. He made his first contact with the USA in 1986, by then an outstanding guitarist. Eric recorded his first instrumental studio album, First Touch, in Los Angeles, with noted studio musicians. After a foray into the jazz scene, Eric returned to his musical roots in the 1990s, playing in several country bands and forming the band Heart and Steel, which was equally successful in Germany. Among other gigs, Heart and Steel played as the warm-up band for the Bellamy Brothers and Carlene Carter. Formative experiences like the following continue to have a major influence on his musical development: EP: In 2002 I bought my first ever gospel album. It was an Elvis album, called His Hand in Mine. I’d never heard music like that before, and in Germany that kind of music isn’t really very popular. It touched me to the core, and I’ve had goose bumps more than once from listening to it. Now I’ve really heard Elvis, and understood him. Since then, gospel music hasn’t let me go. I’ve bought other albums by all sorts of artists who make this wonderful music that affects my soul so deeply and won’t let it go. Through this music I’ve found my faith again, and my way back to God. Now I can say with absolute conviction: “I can feel his hand in mine and that’s all I need to know.” In February 2008, Eric Paisley produced his first gospel album in Nashville. His new Nashville team consists of the pioneers of Nashville Sounds, and it reads like the Who’s Who? of country and gospel music. It includes the legendary Jordanaires (featuring Gordon Stoker and Ray Walker); “Miss” Millie Kirkham, vocals; Jimmy Capps, acoustic guitar; Reggie Young, lead guitar; Walt Cunningham, piano; and Elvis drummer D.J. Fontana. EP: I’ve devoted myself to the nostalgic sound of the 50s and 60s, with all its charm and honesty, and I’ll continue that tradition and stay alive. My love for God and gospel music has allowed me to travel the long road from northern Germany to Nashville. I’ve found a second homeland here in America.
