For singer-songwriter-arranger-producer Rosephanye Powell (pronounced ro-SEH-fuh-nee, like "Stephanie"), the concept for the CD project MOTHERLESS CHILD began in 2002, and was an outgrowth of many years of researching, performing, lecturing and arranging African-American spirituals as a student, classical singer, educator, and composer. Her passion for preserving the spiritual and its legacy has been captured in this highly artistic, enlightening and entertaining CD. In Motherless Child, Dr. Powell presents the spiritual, not as a historical folk music, but as contemporary music that is relative to the everyday experiences of contemporary Americans.
Motherless ChilD, the debut solo album of the university professor, is entertainment and so much more! With the African-American “spiritual” as its centerpiece, this provocative, inspiring and soul-stirring project takes the listener on a musical journey into American slavery—from Africa to the New World. Through fresh musical arrangements and stylized vocalizations, traditional spirituals are given a contemporary face lift that is sure to captivate audiences. Rosephanye’s distinctive vocal style demonstrates a wide range of musical influences, including gospel, jazz, R&B and classical music. Her pure tones, vocal flair, passionate narratives, and contemporary arrangements are sure to leave a lasting impression!
The ten tracks of Motherless Child are a tapestry of music, narratives and drama that provide insights into the heartaches, pains, and hopes of the slave, as well as the inner fortitude of the African-American slave. From the first track the listener will be struck by the awareness that this is no ordinary musical rendering but a true artistic masterpiece. Its passionate message is sure to speak to the hearts of music lovers of all ages!
MOTHERLESS CHILD is dedicated solely to the performance of spiritual arrangements with one exception. The first track, Journey Part I: Harambe, is an original song that Dr. Powell composed to support the narrative which describes how the journey to slavery and the birth of the spiritual began in Africa. MOTHERLESS CHILD is distinct in that the project is peppered with brief narratives and a dramatic audio portrayal which serve to enlighten and educate as well as entertain the listener.
The MOTHERLESS CHILD ENSEMBLE was comprised of several former students from the Auburn University Gospel Choir under the direction of Rosephanye (Associate Director) and her husband, Dr. William C. Powell, director of the AUGC. They include: Stephanie Jones, soprano;Danielle Warren, soprano; Jennifer Evins, alto;Joanna Evins, alto; Gregory Cooper, tenor; Charles Mason tenor; and Cornelious Warren, bass-baritone. Other artist-musicians featured on the project include pianist-arranger Anthony Walker, poet-comedian Kelechi Jaavaid, pianist-arranger Byron Thomas and singer Stephanie Jones.
Dr. Powell is an Associate Professor of Voice at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. Prior to this appointment, she was as an Associate Professor of Music at Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas, where she served as chair of the music department. Dr. Powell began her tenure at Philander Smith College in 1993, after receiving the Doctor of Music in vocal performance at The Florida State University. From 1987-1990, she served as Assistant Professor of Music at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Powell earned the Master of Music degree in vocal performance and pedagogy from Westminster Choir College, and the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Alabama State University.
During her career, Dr. Powell has distinguished herself as a researcher, interpreter and performer of the African-American spiritual. She has presented numerous recitals and lecture-recitals at churches, concert halls, universities and professional meetings around the country. Her article, "The African-American Spritual: Preparation and Performance Considerations" was published recently in the NATS Journal of Singing.
Dr. Powell is a nationally-recognized composer and arranger of choral music, currently published by the Hal Leonard Corporation, Gentry Publications/Fred Bock Music, and Alliance Music Publications. As one of the country''s premier women composers of concert choral music, her works are in great demand at schools, churches, and choral festivals around the world. Dr. Powell''s works have been conducted and premiered by internationally-renowned choral conductors, including, but not limited to, Anton Armstrong, Philip Brunelle, Bob Chilcott, Rodney Eichenberger, Albert McNeil, Tim Seelig, and André Thomas.
Dr. Powell is married to Dr. William C. Powell, Associate Director of Choral Activities, Auburn University. The couple resides in Auburn, Alabama. They have two young daughters Camille Elise and Kaitlyn Elizabeth.
