"It’s time for Joanna Newsom and Feist to step aside and pass the microphone over to Kelsey Shields, the new queen of Indie/Folk/Rock. The singer/songwriter, originally from Kasilof, AK, has been winning over audiences all over Salem, OR where she currently resides.
She recorded her debut in August 2007. However, since moving to Oregon, her style has evolved to the point where she is no longer “satisfied with that EP,” she says. “So I''m in the early stages of recording a new one at a home studio in Salem.”
Shields’ new EP will contain songs that have already been field-tested in shows around Salem and Alaska. The songs have drawn comparisons to the works of artists such as Brandi Carlile, Patty Griffin, Iron & Wine and Ray LaMontagne, among others.
Shields’ Alaskan upbringing has influenced her songwriting style in that she writes about everyday life in Alaska. She’s written songs about flannel shirt pajamas, the Big Dipper and one about fishermen from the Cook Inlet. “While some of my songs might ask hard questions about what happens in life or even criticize certain situations, others celebrate love, home, and relationships. I desire that the message listeners come away with is one of hope, peace, and more importantly, honesty.”
