Details:
In My Dreams is the imaginative creation of composer/performer Yuri Tsapayev and his ensemble “Indie Knight.” Making guest appearances are British institution keyboardist Terry Disley and guitarist Randy Quan. Together they create a memorable musical experience.
The first quality of all the compositions on this CD that the first-time listeners notice is the rhythms that pervade every cut. Though the compositional styles range from big-band-like brass parts to Latin percussion to Reggae, all have in common a rhythmic foundation that is at once substantial and elegant.
The title cut, In My Dreams, rolls it all up into one haunting melody. The basic rhythm and tempo are essentially Latin, but the brass ensemble accents are as reminiscent of the Dorsey Brothers as they are of Chuck Mangione. Disley provides the piano melody line that floats on the soft bed of the other voices.
With In Perfect Sight we find a more driving bass beneath the piano lead. The rhythmic style evolves into a tempo and feel that would be a perfect pace for a thoroughbred at a leisurely gallop.
Another example of Tsapayev’s skill at creating gently driving beats is In the Green Hills. Disley’s piano lead and brass ensemble accompaniment coast gracefully on the rich rhythmic bed beneath them. This type of compositional structure is heard in virtually every cut in this collection.
In I Moved Away we find a more powerful statement that relies on a rich bass line, accenting the downbeats, with yet another creative piano lead by Disley, this time accented by synthetic chimes. Randy Quan adds guitar accents to enrich the blend.
Perhaps the most representative composition is The Winter Sings and Howls. While it is most certainly upbeat and even danceable, it is probably most noteworthy for the intriguing merger of a light touch and a Reggae rhythm that speaks directly to the feet. In addition to the piano leads and brass accents, synthetic string voices are occasionally used as well.
Tsapayev’s musical roots span almost four decades, beginning in Crimea and extending in this century to San Francisco. With musical influences like Sergei Rachmaninoff, Procol Harum and Acoustic Alchemy it is not hard to see the sources of the richness and eclectic flavor of his compositions.
Terry Disley’s career has placed him side-by-side with musical icons since the 1980s. He has collaborated with Bon Jovi, Sir Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, and toured with Acoustic Alchemy among others. His unique keyboard style draws from his study of classical music as well as numerous popular and jazz styles.
Randy Quan adds his own tasty contribution on guitar with licks that are both economical and melodious. His facility in R&B, Blues and jazz idioms provides him with a style that is eclectic and innovative.
These three world-class talents merge seamlessly in the fine collection of compositions to provide a rich and exciting landscape of sound, passion, and inspiration.
