Rivaling the quality of Peter Gabriel, or Sting, the production is first class. CCM veteran, Paul Clark, paints sonic landscapes and haunting lyric compositions inviting the listener to travel with him on a journey of the last days of Jesus Christ on earth.
Stellar musicianship flows from multiple Award winning talents of Paul, Phil Keaggy, Jay Pfeifer, Rod Lincoln, Don Harris, Kevin Rogers and Pedro Eustache.
From the opening track, “Approaching Jerusalem,” to the Middle-Eastern rhythms of “Triumphal Entry,” you will be drawn into the flow of the scene changes. Dine at the table in the upper room “Remembrance,” and then travel to the frantic chase of betrayal and arrest in “Gethsemane…. Lanterns, Torches, Weapons.”
Transitioning, you are in a face to face, first person dialogue narrating the events of the night and day in the epic song, “Teteleastai,” where the gut wrenching vocal splashes agony and victory on the powerful “Middle Eastern/World Beat” music canvas.
Descending to “Hades,” a haunting piano melody drifts across the stratosphere as the foreboding ground swell of evil rises underneath it. After the melody is established, the counterpart dissident notes play at the same time over rhythmic patterns building layer upon layer of rage and force until it is exhausted.
Rising from the abyss, “Anabaino,” ascends in a cinematic bed of music resurrecting the listener to a powerful crescendo.
“The Promise Of My Father,” closes the journey. The melancholic cry of the Duduk provides the imagery for the wind to blow through the hearts of those who thirst.
Not to be dismissed as another “Contemporary Christian Music” drone, “Approaching Jerusalem” will stand on its own two feet against any music Goliath.
