The story begins in a small town in Kansas, on the campus of an even smaller college. Russell Pyle had matriculated to Hesston College in January of 1999 from the bustling burgh of Richmond, VA. Musicians seem to attract musicians and this was proven true when Russell met the first person he saw on campus, a guitarist by the name of Josh Gingerich. Josh was already a fairly accomplished Bluegrass guitarist and would show Rus songs as Rus would show him some of the more folksy stuff he was writing. After hanging out for a year or so, both went their separate ways, Russell to the Shennendoah Valley of Virginia, Josh about a few miles down the road to Newton, KS.
Fast forward to winter of 2005-2006. Josh, now living in Albuquerque, receives a phone call from a number he doesn’t recognize. It was Russell, explaining that he would be moving out to Albuquerque late that spring. The two hadn’t talked in 6 or some odd years, and after catching up they made sure that they would hang out when Russell finally moved, which he did in June of 2006. That fall the two began playing songs together informally, often remarking to one another “Damn, we should really get serious with this thing.” Which they didn’t. Not for another year or so.
The summer of 2007 was when The Porter Draw was actually solidified. Josh and Rus played sets for an art opening some friends were having. At one of these sets they met Ben Wood, a lanky banjo player who had some damn good songs of his own. The three traded off songs and enjoyed one another enough to set up a small show at Winning’s Coffee in August. There was a descent crowd, and although Ben had not agreed to be a part of a band just yet, Rus and Josh backed him up and vice versa. The harmonies that characterize The Porter Draw’s music were there from the very beginning and Ben’s banjo added the much need pop that would complete the music. In January of 2008 The Porter Draw played to an over-flowing house at The Blackbird Buvette, with Josh’s more than capable brother, Andy on the upright bass.
Andy bowed out early in the game, realizing that the band would be more than he could give time for. In May, the boys asked a friend and local Barman, Vince Edgerton to step in on the bass. The summer went by and the shows piled up as the band stepped into the studio to record their first record, “Trouble”. After the process was finished, Mojo Atzberger, a local drumming genius, asked the band if they wouldn’t mind seeing what it would sound like with some real rhythm behind it. After a few practices and an amazing show, Mojo was asked to join permanently.
The Porter Draw is characterized by an eclectic mix of influences from songwriters such as Steve Earle and Robert Earl Keen, to the Bluegrass music of the Appalachian mountains, the dirty, gutter soaked hardcore of the big East Coast cities all the way to the melodic punk of the 90’s East Bay scene in Oakland. All of these elements come together to form a type of American music in its truest form: it’s a melting pot.
The boys have also made a name for themselves in the Albuquerque scene for having a rowdy, raucous live show, playing old-time country and bluegrass music like it was punk. It is this energy that connects the band to their audience, and demands attention when they take the stage.
