Program Notes for the Grand Rapids Guitar Quartet CD

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, (b Salzburg, 27 Jan 1756; d Vienna, 5 Dec 1791). While the young Mozart was known throughout Europe as a child prodigy, the mature Mozart was known as a composer accomplished in all mediums of music common during his lifetime. Eine Kleine Nachtmusik was written in 1787 during the same period that Mozart was writing the opera, Don Giovanni. Eine Kleine Nachtmusik demonstrates his gifts for beautiful melodies, elegant formal structures and rich harmonies. Originally for string ensemble this arrangement for four guitars was made to use as much of the range of the standard guitar as possible.

Swedish composer Johan Helmich Roman (b Stockholm, 26 Oct 1694; d Kalmar 20 Dec 1758) is known as the “Father of Swedish music”. Roman spent the years from 1716-21 studying in England, and in later years traveled to France, Italy and Germany to perfect his art. The Drottningholm Music or Music for a Royal Wedding, one of Roman''s best-known compositions, consists of a collection of 24 pieces that were written for the wedding of the Crown Prince Adolf Frederick of Sweden and his bride Louisa Ulrika of Prussia in August of 1744. The four movements here are from a set of eight that were arranged for guitar quartet at the request of the publisher.

Michael Praetorius (b Creuzburg an der Werra, nr Eisenach, 15 Feb 1571; d Wolfenbüttel, 15 Feb 1621) was known primarily as a church musician, composer, organist and theorist. Terpsichore published in 1612 is a group of 312 dances from various sources that he arranged for four, five and six voices. Dedicated to Duke Heinrich Julius, Terpsichore was the only secular music collection that he published during his lifetime. These arrangements for four guitars were made by the noted British guitarist and composer Gilbert Biberian.
