Details:
Natural Selection (Limited Edition) is Eric Underwood’s third independent CD release but his first solo effort. In many ways this album is a collection of songs whose release date is long overdue. The first eight songs are produced by Kazutaka Noda and all these but one, “This Is Not a Love Song,” are from the original unofficial EP Natural Selection released in 2007. Tracks 9 and 10 are unreleased material produced by Don DiLego in 2004 and the final track produced by Eric and recorded on his Mac at the end of 2007.

The songs for the Natural Selection EP (tracks 2-8) were written after Eric moved from the Bronx to Harlem in New York City at the end of a long relationship. The project, which started as a demo, developed into a more polished acoustic album with each song having a character of it’s own. Many of the songs actually represent people in Eric’s life at the time. The inspiration for these songs came after a long break from writing and performing. During the creative process Eric’s “new voice” emerged.

Shortly after recording the seven song EP Eric recorded “This Is Not a Love Song” with Kaz Noda doing full production this time. The opening track is a departure from Eric’s more traditional songs about love. “This Is Not a Love Song” has become a crowd pleasing favorite at Eric’s live band shows.

“Beautiful” and “Can I Touch the Clouds” were songs that never made it on to a CD until now. Both songs, recorded and produced by Don DiLego, were stand out tracks from the beginning. Guest musicians include Imani Copolla on violin and Eladia on cello and harmony vocals.

The last track, “Baby You’re the One,” was written on Christmas day in 2007. Eric recorded this himself on his Mac laptop. This song represents the dawning of a new and better love/relationship, the turning-point.

Finally, Natural Selection (Limited Edition) comes at the end of a decade of Eric Underwood’s acoustic guitar playing albums. This, the last record of the trilogy, closes on a high note full of hope and optimism. Take it all in. It is here that the tides will turn and the artist reinvents himself once again
