Details:
Mellow D

Andrew Charles Miller (born July 26, 1983), also known by his stage name, Mellow D is an American MC, Producer, Songwriter.

Hailing from Colorado Springs, CO, he''s beginning to make a name for himself as contender in the Midwest Hip-Hop scene. Known for laid back rhymes and innovative beats he wrote/mixed and produced his entire debut effort (...Just D) himself. Though D’s style seems laid back at first due to his delivery, give a closer listen and you hear a passion and sincerity that’s rarely seen from a rookie MC.

LIFE:

D was born Andrew Charles Miller on Ft Carson, CO, July 26, 1983. Born to a military family, they found themselves stationed overseas before he could walk. They continued to move around from Fort to Base in Europe before making their final move back to the states in 1992. Often finding herself at home with D, and his sister Angela Miller. D’s mother, Rhonda Miller, spent a lot of the time exposing her children to music. Since they were overseas there wasn’t a lot of exposure to the “pop” music of the 80’s. So D and his sister were exposed to Soul, Classic Rock, Country, Blues, and R&B from the 60’s and 70’s. If you listen to his music you can hear, that this still has an influence on his style today.

Right out of high school (Widefield High) D’s parents decided to split after years of tension and D moved out of his parent’s home. Though he had his share of trouble with the law toward the end of high school, this was the first time he had really faced an uncensored world, and it was at age 18 that his life began to spin out of control. The next few years were spent in a drug/alchohol indused haze that would tear what little life he had to pieces. In the fall of 2004 D found out that he was going to be a father, and decided that he would have to get his life together. His daughter Alaina Miller was born 7/11/2005 and he had reason to live again. This was the same summer that D began making beats.

D got an old cpu from a friend Charles Nichols who had found it in a dumpster, fixed it and put an old copy of Fruity Loops on it for D. Having no prior knowledge of beat structure, software, or mechanics, it was a slow start. But after a couple of months locked in his room, he was making actual beats. At this point he decided that he may have an interest in becoming a producer.

Around the start of the year, D still hadn’t found anyone interested rapping for him, giving the fact that he had no credentials. He had always been a good freestyle rapper, and had been honing his rap skills at parties, in public, or just in the ride by himself. He knew that he could ride a beat, but he had never tried to “write” rhymes and encountered frustration whenever he tried because he did not yet grasp the concept of “counting bars”. A few months into it, he had cracked the code, and was writing non-stop.

Toward the end of January, D sold his car. He sold it to a man who calls himself “Devilish” and at the time was trying to launch his own label. They became friends, and one night D was over at [Devilish]’s and asked him if he could use his studio equipment. They sat down and dropped “Takin’ Over” in one sitting. It was a rough cut at the time, but at that point D knew he was on to something.

D returned to Widefield to find Shock (Mista DGF), D met shock back in 2002, he’s related to his daughter’s mother’s family. Shock had been in the game since the mid 90’s, a time when it was far more difficult to get exposure for your music (before you-tube, myspace and itunes). D went to Shock with his new song in an effort to get advice on what he was looking at moving forward. Shock was impressed with D’s initial effort and could see the drive in his eyes. He enjoyed the track, but made certain it was clear to D, that he was far from realizing his dreams, and had a lot of work to put in if he stood a chance in the music game.

D took Shock’s advice and got back to the beats and rhymes. He continued to work with Shock and other local artists over the next year. It was still hard to get the wheels turning, and he was left with a number of projects that just didn’t get finished. But every night he was back in the lab making music. He began using what little money he had to spare to buy equipment. He picked up a copy of Reason 3.0, an AKG Perception 200, a Bheringer mixer, and borrowed a Midi Keyboard from his sister. He began reconnecting with anyone he ever knew that was doing, or had done music. Trying to pick up valuable knowledge and build strategic relationships along the way. He managed to get that first single onto local DJ [DJ Wax]’s mixtape, Vol. 7 Floodin’ the Streets.

Clouded lexicon is more than a Label (Clouded Lexicon Records LLC.), it’s more than a group, it’s more like a movement. It’s the idea that music can be “real”. You don’t have to hide behind false pretenses. You can just say how you feel and chances are…someone out there that is feeling, or has felt the same way. It’s an organization, of like minded, driven individuals. Working together toward a better cause…”REAL” music. It’s a shame that we’ve gotten to the point that real is a “gimmick”, but Clouded Lexicon is real none the less.

THE MISSION:

The mission is plain and simple…real music. The good, the bad, the ugly…the real. Whatever that may be, and wherever. You will find Mellow D and Clouded Lexicon. D said it best himself: “may not be your favorite, but I sure ain’t the same”. If you are looking for a sound that’s refreshing and different, and content that has substance you can relate to, you NEED to keep an eye out for Mellow D.
