JUST IN TIME COMPOSERS AND PLAYERS by John Sarkissian
In 1994-95 during my last year as a graduate student at Boston’s New England Conservatory, I had an idea. I was witnessing an ever decreasing number of audience members at contemporary music concerts. Feeling that the culprit for the lack of enthusiasm among the audiences was the then prevalent and rather inaccessible musical language used by most of the East Coast composers, I called upon composer friends and fellows, who shared the same feeling, to organize informal musical evenings presenting our own music to other music lovers. Michael Wartofsky had a more ambitious idea. To form a composers’ collaborative with a regular concert season which would secure a venue for our compositions as well as promote the kind of music we were writing, which for lack of a better term was known on both coasts as “post modern.” Soon the idea followed that we should have both composers and performers in our group who would closely collaborate in the creative process as well as the performance of the pieces. By the end of the 94-95 academic year Just in Time Composers and Players was born. The founder members were composers Katie Down, Michael McLaughlin, John Sarkissian, Steven Stalzer, Michael Wartofsky, singer Rhoda Bernard, and conductor Paco Ojeda-González.
From 1999 onward JIT had a consistent group of prolific member composers. During its ten- year existence, JIT, which was by no means the only group of its kind in the Boston area, managed to remain competitive, presenting several concerts of two or three different programs each year (see https://www.tradebit.com). These concerts offered mostly chamber music works by member as well as several guest composers, including Lee Hyla, David Patterson, Vuk Kulenovic, and many others. Among JIT’s guest performers, to name a few, were Doriot Anthony Dwyer, Luis Leguia, D’Anna Fortunato, the Really Eclectic String Quartet, and the Arden Quartet. During our concerts, our audiences were exposed to just about everything from new opera excerpts by Marshall, Sarkissian, and Wartofsky to the jazz and Indian-influenced music of Rossi, from Stephen James performing his own luscious piano pieces to his young piano students performing pieces by other JIT composers, from operatic mezzo-sopranos to solo mandolin, solo organ, and brass quintet. In 2003-2004 JIT had its last concert in Bedford, Massachusetts. At the time, the member composers were Hayg Boyadjian, Erika Foin, Jorge Villavicencio-Grossmann, Pamela Marshall, Marc Rossi, and John Sarkissian. December 2007
