Born in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1938, Thomas L. Read has spent the majority of his career in the state of Vermont. He holds degrees from the Oberlin, New England, Mozarteum, and Peabody Conservatories. As violinist as well as composer, he has been a member of the Erie Philharmonic, Baltimore Symphony, Boston Festival Arts, and Handel & Haydn Society Orchestras, Vermont Symphony, and the Saratoga Festival of Baroque Music. He joined the faculty of the University of Vermont in 1967, becoming Professor Emeritus in 2008. During his more than 40 years on the faculty, he taught countless students, conducted and coached many concerts and musical theater productions, and led an innovative series of new music concerts and lectures (Symposium on Contemporary Music, held annually from 1968 until 1991). He has been a recipient of several Arts Council and University Stipends, and has been awarded fellowships from organizations such as the McDowell Colony, the Charles Ives Institute, and the Johnson Composers Conference. He continues to be active as a violin soloist and conductor as well as a composer. His music is published by C. F. Peters, Tunbridge Music, Tuba Euphonium Press, the American Composers Edition and Yelton Rhodes Music. Further information (and a full catalogue) are available from: https://www.tradebit.com

Read’s music embraces a wide expressive language, focusing on the lyrical outgrowths of autonomous structural processes. His natural control of form allows for the integration of diverse melodic and harmonic idioms, for united emotional goals. A sense of journey is often a part of a Read work; the opening selection, "Night Pageantry" is an excellent example: contrast the beginning, with its jagged, atonal landscape, to the ending, with its Mozart-via-Poulenc humor and lightness. In between these poles, we have traveled through a variety of scenes and moods. For this listener, a Read piece often gives the aural impression of a drive through a Vermont landscape during the peak of foliage season: the colors one sees are constantly changing, but they are always vibrant, committed, and all a part of a powerful larger image. Though the smallest details are under control, Read never loses the sense of the impact that a piece’s large-scale shape should make on a listener.

The works on this disc provide an overview of pieces from the last 30 years. From the light, festive joy of "Christmas Variations" to the intense, abstract trajectory of "Piano Music, Volume II", Read’s music seduces with its supreme attention to detail, its naturally unfolding lyricism, and its deeply musical voice.
