Tainted By Trolls is a collaboration of man and machine. It is one man surrounded by machines relaying his own twist on sonic vision. Impulses aching to be released from the man’s heart, mind, and soul, manifested through tools currently available in this corner of the galaxy, Tainted By Trolls wont demand much for you to cross over to the other side, except maybe a small chunk of your time and attention to digest the musings of an interplanetary origin.
Hailing from Berkeley, California, Shane Otis is the living, breathing dimension to this project. He has played in bands for years, Madcap in the early 90''s, You''re In Uranus though the rest of the 90''s and Llama Dali in the 00''s. Now he is doing his own musical project and covers well, essentially everything...at one point or another... He plays the parts and records and assembles them on the computer, then further arranges and assembles the pieces until the project is suitable for live performance. The Macbook Pro is the technological core of the team, running loops, synthesizers and the Swiss-Army-knife of audio processors, the Fireface 400 directing signal flow traffic. This is pushed out to a submix into dual 15” speakers running the ‘backup band’ so to speak. In other words, this is human and computer performing music together. Tainted By Trolls uses elements of sampling and sequencing while allowing for improvisation combined with live performance. In addition to hypnotic sounds, Shane is working on incorporating a synchronized psychedelic light show to much of the music.
The music is energetic post alternative electronic metallic rock. It can be aggressive, edgy rock to smooth and ethereal ambience, sometimes acoustic, sometimes electric, sometimes distorted, sometimes all at once. One eloquent fan suggested that listening to the song Bulbous Aquaticus “felt like it took me around the Universe and dropped me back in front of my keyboard.” The music often creates soundscapes rather than the traditional pop music paradigm. Though, there’s sometimes a bit of that too. It is a man’s interpretation on a variety of musical influence from a variety of genres.
“A certain energy in the music is often what inspires me, “ says Shane. “It could be a cool riff, a nice hook, some fantastic playing, or a band that’s really tight getting off on jamming with one another. The inspiration could really come from any thing as long as it just happens to hit me in that certain way.” Tainted By Trolls are influenced by a darker, arty, edgy lot – Adrian Belew, Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Aphex Twin, Cornelius, Mike Patton’s various projects, Shpongle and Porcupine Tree and his hall time favorites, Rush, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Salvador Dali, plus many others.
“I compose and perform the majority of the TBT parts then reproduce them for you with the assistance of Logic Pro, Ableton Live, virtual analog modeling synthesizers and guitar processors, and a Fireface 400 audio interface which allows me to personally control my sound and mix during the show. The sounds in which you hear are those which I have assembled. Then I play all over it. A lot of it involves doing my homework.. getting the parts together and recorded well enough and then implementing those ideas into a context which can be reproduced live.”
