Details:
The Seas are an Austin, TX, band who have played psychedelic art-pop since 2006. They released their debut album, Let’s Fake It, in 2009. In 2006, the group released a four-song EP that gained local attention from press and radio.

They embrace the future but scavenge the past…dress up and dress down. The sound is: Juju charms and slippery neo-soul vocals. Heavy beats and slinky treats. Unadulterated pop. A mutty mix of styles and philosophies.

Members include Nurk (lead singer/guitarist), LaRue (bass/keys/vocals), John “Tubby” Ashley (drums/percussion), and El Jefe (bass/guitar/vocals). Nurk pairs “absurdly ricochet vocals” (Austin American-Statesman, Jan. 18, 2007) with dynamic theatrics, while LaRue provides textures using keys and bass. Tubby’s locomotive drumming style provides danceable beats and straight-up rock backbone. El Jefe is the all-around utility musician, filling out arrangements with his solid guitar work and bass playing as well as providing backing vocals for live shows.

Songs from the 2006 EP, including “Little Girl” and “Rita Lee,” have been played on KVRX 91.7 FM (University of Texas Radio). The release received positive reviews from local Austin press.

In 2008, The Seas were featured performing in a video installation by visual artist Yoon Cho. The group has also collaborated with Houston artist Shawna Mouser who created the collage piece featured on the cover of Let’s Fake It.

The group has performed live all around Texas, in Louisiana, in Oklahoma, and in New York City. In the summer of 2008, Nurk exhibited many of the songs off Let’s Fake It during his “Internationally Indefinite Tour” across Europe. The Seas plan to continue performing live locally and in other U.S. cities in support of their new album.
