Fritz Richard toured the Southwest with his band, The Plan, in the early 90''s. This well produced CD with its sometimes dreamy, sometimes reflective, sometimes quirky lyrics stands out with memorable melodies and chorus hooks. From the raucous rocker, Tear Down These Walls, to the epic anthem Babylon, to the soaring ballad, Last Dance (all award winning songs), this CD has 11 tracks (plus a surprise extended version of Tear Down These Walls) that also feature well known session musicians Tim Pierce (Crowded House, Rick Springfield, Toy Matinee), Sara K., Jack Moore, Holly Sherwood (The Marauders), and Andrea Cline (The Muttz, Cadillac Bob).
More recently, the anthem Babylon is again relevant to the current ''American Tea Party'' movement, as it rails against those who would rape America of her most precious treasures (the long-held traditions of entrepreneurial spirit and the rewarding of success), while the politically connected prop up shaky institutions and saddle future generations with a mountain of financial obligations.

Well, if all goes to ''according to plan'' 1991 will be the year of Fritz Richard. His most ambitious album project to date is due out early in the year, and if the preview package is any indication of the quality, emotion and epic style of his album Picture This, then we are all in for a real treat. Fritz Richard''s music is a sizzling blend of pop rock with elements of Elton John, the Beatles, and he sings more like Donny Osmond than I am sure he likes to admit. The production of this new material also has enough elements of the George Michael sound to make it extremely contemporary. So much for known comparisons; but this is a written medium.
The tape opens with an old favorite, Tear Down These Walls, an upbeat song about destroying the barriers of communication between people. The music is accented by many expert piano licks and builds to a climax with some well calculated key changes that add sophistication and excitement. Last Dance was well received in some west coast contests and was a successful local video on Public Access Television. This rerecording is beautiful and lush, and probably my favorite cut, though that is a really hard call to make. The spooky pirate radio sound effects in the opening set the mood for this swan song to humanity after the effects of nuclear devastation. Andy Fitek''s aching guitar soars with wings and blends superbly with the vocals. You can feel the bombs rumbling in the distance as Earth''s last couple dances by bombs early light. It''s All Right picks the mood back up again with its quirky dizziness. This song made me feel like I was listening to John Lennon again, with a story about a hapless guy who just can''t get the girl; but clings to hope anyway. Everything builds as the vocals layer, and the unidentified female singer really knocks me out.
Fritz Richard s newest and proudest anthem Babylon caps off the preview with the force of a hurricane. Babylon blasts the ruling class who continue to rape the land and screw the ''working man'' to line their pockets and call it success. The highlight is again Andy Fitek s operatic guitar pulling every bit of tension and feeling from the ever ascending final chorus.
The production is top notch, bringing out qualities in the music that I had never heard before, and I am pretty familiar with Fritz live sound. Keep your eyes peeled for Picture This when it hits the local stores. If this is just a taste, I can t wait for the entire meal.
