Details:
Three men admit they belong to the entity that is Approximate: Glenn Hubler (bass, guitar, vocals, etc.), Rob Lippmann (drums and percussion), and John Yonosh (guitar, bass, vocals, keyboards, etc.).

They bill themselves as “the craziest band you’ve never heard of,” but that’s just their modesty showing through. If you haven’t heard of Approximate, get ready for a wild ride.

Approximate combines the jaw-dropping complexities you’d normally associate with progressive bands with a warm, organic approach to the recording process for a sound that’s unique.

“Greatest Hits” shows off the band’s eclectic tastes and influences. While an observer once quipped that the band sounds like “Primus meets the Cure,” it’s pointless to make such comparisons: Approximate is not the best at what they do -- they are the only band doing what they do.

There are a number of humorous tracks on the disc (e.g., “Chaps” and “Beerfarts and Cheesecake”), but don’t be fooled. This isn’t some weak-ass novelty band. The songs compiled on “Greatest Hits” run the emotional range.

Glenn and John formed Approximate back in 1994, but their partnership actually dates back to the dim and distant days of 1991. Since then, they’ve developed a rapport that only comes with years of playing together.

The latest in a Spinal Tap-like procession of drummers (including Miles Adams, Steve McCall, Pat Thomas, and Aaron Walker), Rob Lippmann (ex-Lotus) now has the gig and claims he isn’t a bit nervous concerning snooker accidents or unicycle mishaps.

Glenn, John, and Rob are aided and abetted by a variety of guest stars, such as Jay Umble, Chris Van Scyoc, and Bob Moses.

“Greatest Hits” is an excellent sampling of Approximate’s storied catalog.
