In October 1996, a bunch of musicians got together with desire to share experiences, interests and ideals. We called ourselves ATAJO and we are a band that has, since then, tried reflect our surrounding social reality in our compositions.
Over the past almost 13 years, we have walked the streets and listened to the stories and the pleas of our brothers and sisters. We have watched our people die in war, but we also see the little child who smiles in the arms of her mother. The past decade in our country has been filled with rage, strength and love. And daily, we have born witness to our people’s magic—whether it’s securing food for their family or putting their lives on the line for something they believe in. It is this that we seek to represent in our music: our people’s lives, loves, fears, challenges and accomplishments. And it’s for this reason that we communicate with the world in our own language—to reach the hearts of our people, touch their souls and awake their minds.
Though the group has taken different forms over the years, ATAJO is now an electronic-acoustic mix of six musicians (including vocals, guitar, percussion, drums, bass and keyboard) and we perform regularly in the city of La Paz and throughout Bolivia. In the past several years we have begun to perform internationally, traveling to Venezuela, Germany and Brazil.
It’s never easy to place ATAJO’s music into a specific genre. We like to say that ATAJO is not a style of music but rather a way of making music that is based in rock as a form of expression. We then throw in some reggae, traditional Andean instruments and rhythms, hip-hop and much more, calling it urban rock.
