Don Harvey is a soulful drummer & composer living in Austin, Texas. He was raised in New York, in a home filled with classical music. Don started drumming at age 14 & hit the road when he turned 18. He made his first professional recordings in Tel Aviv (where he resided from 1975-1980) with David Broza & Jonathan Geffen; two of Israel’s best-known recording artists. His early experiences playing with musicians from around the Middle East had a lasting impact.

In 1985, five years after moving to Los Angeles, Don toured the world with Charlie Sexton. Sexton introduced him to Austin, where he’s lived since 1989. Don’s performed & recorded with Ronnie Lane & Ian McLagan (Faces), Joe Ely, Billy Bragg, Alejandro Escovedo, Tonio K, Storyville, Iain Matthews (Fairport Convention), Martha Davis (the Motels), Jo Carol Pierce, David Halley, Broken Homes, Rob Laufer and Michael Hall. He’s produced recordings for Beaver Nelson (including a duet with Lucinda Williams), Billy Harvey & actor-musician Lukas Haas. Don received the “Best Drummer” award at the 2006-2007 Austin Music Awards. He’s had the honor of being joined on-stage by Bruce Springsteen (with Joe Ely), Pete Townshend & Ronnie Wood (with Ian McLagan) and Wilco (with Billy Bragg). Don’s co-written with Tonio K, Charlie Sexton, Martha Davis and David Halley.

Now, at age 52, Don’s composing his own instrumental music. He describes it as “Open Music” which he defines as “influenced by many genres; unclassifiable.” Its sound reflects Don''s musical life; middle-eastern, blues, rock, ambient, jazz & classical. A Dance in Red, Open Music Volume one was recorded and engineered by George Reiff, mixed by Stuart Sullivan and mastered by Dave McNair.

Don’s active in Austin’s music community. In 1995, he co-founded the SIMS Foundation, which provides access to mental health care for Austin-area musicians. He co-owned the legendary Austin Rehearsal Complex (“the ARC”), a hub of Austin music for a decade. He’s Honorary Co-Chair (with Alejandro Escovedo) of Austin Child Guidance Center’s annual “Super-Hero Show.”
