Details:
Johnny Cash had just past away. My producer, Perry, and I were discussing his great career during a long drive to a gig in Chico, CA when Johnny’s famous “Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison” album came up in the conversation. Perry and I joked that I should play Folsom and record a live album there as well, so he called his assistant Nicole in New York and asked her to send a promotional package to the warden. I had forgotten all about our conversation until Perry called me three months later and said, “Get ready, you’re playing Folsom Prison on July 4th.”

When the morning of July 4th finally, came we were standing at the gates asking to be let into the prison. This is not something that comes naturally. Perry, who was doing sound, Kristian playing bass, Joey on drums, and my best friend Dan who filmed the event, and I all went in together. We were to play as a three-piece band in the “yard” for 350 inmates and four correctional officers. No barriers between them and us. When the inmates were let into the yard, they slowly circled around us carefully sizing us up. The tension of this moment is hard to describe. I was extremely nervous but knew there was nothing I could do but try and give this performance everything I had and hope for the best.

The live recording will do a better job of telling you the rest of this story. For better or for worse, what is on this disc is how it went down that day. I cannot speak for everybody that braved Folsom with me, though I think they would all agree, that what transpired there on that hot summer afternoon was in many ways the most profound gig we had ever been a part of.

One more thing: a correctional officer on duty that day told us that there was an inmate there that could hear us from his cell – he was also there when Johnny Cash played in 1968.
