With an affinity for guitar greats like Clapton, Duane Allman and Jimi Hendrix, Montréal songwriter, producer and musician Howard Forman writes songs with a timeless, classic bent. A club gig in the early ''90s led Forman to cross paths with singer Irene Marc, whose taste ran towards the soul of Aretha Franklin and Etta James. Forman had worked as a session player at Muscle Shoals where Aretha cut had her classic hits. Something clicked.
Forman began writing songs with Marc''s from-the-heart, soaring vocals in mind, and the pair got lucky with their very first single, "Everybody Knows," charting across Canada in 1993. Albums followed, with a Top 20 hit for the song "Tell Me," and a nationally televised concert special on CTV. Then family and session work came along for Marc, while production gigs and studio work became the priority for Forman. Marc toured Japan with Cirque de Soleil and is featured in their 1st feature film and its Jutras award-winning soundtrack. Forman played on the Allegria soundtrack for the Cirque, watching it become a Top 5 selling Worldbeat album.
Nominated for two Genie Awards in the Best Song in a Motion Picture Category, Forman worked on other projects but would come up with tunes he could hear Irene singing in his head. He decided to move Groove Kings from the back burner to the front, writing new songs for Marc, working slowly and taking the time to "make something that doesn’t suck," he says.

Engineered by Felix winner Rob Heaney (Kevin Parent, Isabelle Boulay, Bet E & Stef) and Grammy/Gemini/Juno winner Denis Nomandeau (Zappa Plays Zappa, Cowboy Junkies, Billy Talent, Tragically Hip), the album showcases Marc''s powerful pipes and tremendous stylistic range. From chilled-out R&B vibes to blues rock numbers, the songs are clean, catchy, melodic adult pop gems that would be at home in a CD collection that featured Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse, or Annie Lennox. Mature themes centre on relationships, emotions and the lessons that life throws at all of us.
Jazz inflected trumpet and soulful horn sections bring an uptown feel to a couple of the tracks, while Latin beats contrast smoking electric guitars. This is an album that feels familiar for all the right reasons, like a favourite worn-in leather jacket. It just works.
