Details:
I''ve alway been a loner. I don''t like being told what to do either. So it''s no surprise that my band, Ballard, is actually just me. Drums, guitars, bass, synths, vocals; the lot. All me.

Power-pop is what I do, bright, shiny power-pop. If you listen to it you''ll probably hear elements of The Beatles, The Move, Cheap Trick, Wings, Badfinger and countless others. I don''t spend all of my time in the Seventies though, you''ll probably also hear Jason Falkner, The Cardigans and The Wannadies. If you don''t hear any of that then I''m doing something wrong.

So who am I exactly? My real name is Darren Riley ( I figured Ballard had more of a ring to it). I''m thirty-six as I write this and have been playing music since I was thirteen. That''s when I got my first guitar and learnt my first riff, Queen''s One Vision. Since then it''s been music all the way. I studied music at Leigh College in the North-West of England (3 quarters of Starsailor were in the year after me, but they''ve been a bit more successful..) and formed my first proper band in ''96, called The Joneses. We did a few gigs but it fizzled out eventually - I guess I got bored.

I then wrote and recorded a solo album called Travel, which was given to a few friends. This marked the first time I started recording my own material. Armed with a digital 8-track recorder I set about experimenting with my writing and learnt to record quickly before the ideas were forgotten. The result was Travel. I should have formed a band and gigged the album but I got a bit bored of it (see a pattern?).

Since then I''ve been writing and recording pretty solidly. I''ve recorded three more full albums, not one of which has been released. But now that''s changing because now I understand the power of the internet. I don''t need to gig an album anymore in order to let people hear the songs. I can release material online, as and when I record it (give or take a few weeks). I can sell it or I can give it away. I can tell everyone who joins my mailing list when new material is due without having to get in touch with a newspaper, magazine or radio station. I can promote my music or I can just let it exist online and see if anyone finds it. I can be my own boss.

I''ve always been a loner. I don''t like being told what to do either.
