This album is based on the new music theatre work, ‘On Becoming,’ for two
a cappella voices that unites and explores the boundaries between music, movement and theatre. This work explores the dimensions / dynamics of the self, and the perpetual capacity of transformation.
Through their varied backgrounds of new music, jazz and world music and experience working with interdisciplinary artists like Meredith Monk, Sasha Bogdanowitsch & Sabrina Lastman have formed a work that deals truly with the essence of ''becoming.''

Sasha Bogdanowitsch is a composer, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, actor and dancer, whose work strives to unite East and West sensibilities by working towards a unique ‘world’ musical language. His compositional output has ranged from writing for chamber ensembles to multitrack tapes with live performance to music for unique ensembles, such as gamelan and early music groups, to live and recorded music for theater, dance and film.
Sasha has a Master of Arts from the University of California at Santa Cruz and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts, both where he studied composition and world musics, integrating the two into multi-movement, inter-disciplinary performances. These works, such as ‘An Ocean Walks Behind a Lake’, ‘Atom Turning in the Sun of Eternity’, ‘Chakra Mundi’ and ‘Akasha’, have focused on the merging of music with theater, movement, and visuals alongside themes of universal cycles and creation.
Sasha has worked extensively as composer and/or a performer in many contexts. He is a co-founder of SaReel Project, an ensemble that performs original music with homemade and world instrumentation that recently composed and performed all the music for ‘Grimm,’ a multimedia dance theater work by Otis Cook & Faith Pilger. He is also a co-founder of World In One, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to sponsor interdisciplinary collaborations. Bogdanowitsch has also worked with the late composer Lou Harrison, Artisan Entertainment, the American Festival of Microtonal Music, choreographers & dancers Faith Pilger & Otis Cook, Sabrina Lastman, Rod Poole, puppeteer and theater director Kathy Foley, New Music Works, Just Strings, Ockham’s Razor, Weave and the gamelans: Son of Lion, Si Aptos, Si Betty, Sari Raras, Pusaka Sunda and UCSC. Awards have included a BMI 1995 Student Composer Award for his ‘Encompassing’ for four tenor voices and a Meet the Composer grant with the American Festival for Microtonal Music.
Sasha Bogdanowitsch has studied composition with Lou Harrison, David Evan Jones, Richard Zvonar, Alan Chaplin, Mark McGurty, and Ros Bandt. He has performed and studied classical North Indian music, Central Javanese gamelan and Sundanese tembang in their countries of origin and in the United States. For the former, he has studied on voice, bansuri bamboo flute and tabla with Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Salamat Ali Khan, Pandit Pran Nath, Terry Riley, Amiya Dasgupta, https://www.tradebit.comhdev, Iqbal Singh, Kalyan Chowdury, John Sackett, David Philipson and Jeffery Whittier. For the latter, he has studied with Djoko Walujo, Nyoman Wenten, Undang Sumarna, Lou Harrison, Sumarsam, I.M. Harjito, Burhan Sukarma, Rukruk Rukmana, Tatang Rukmana, and Yayah Dachlan.
Sasha has taught world music/ ethnomusicology classes at University of New Haven and Central CT State University and has completed two television film scores, ‘The Burkittsville 7’ and ‘Shadow of the Blair Witch’ for Artisan Entertainment and independent film scores for ‘Tea Time’ by Jay Bogdanowitsch & ‘Laundromat Days’ by Simon O’Reilly. Bogdanowitsch has recently recorded with the Meredith Monk Vocal Ensemble for Monk’s new CD, ‘Impermenance’ for ECM Records and is developing a new set of compositions for voice, world instruments & electronics. Sabrina Lastman is a vocalist, composer and educator born in Montevideo, Uruguay. Sabrina moved to Israel in 1999, and since 2005 she is living in New York. Her work concentrates on the creation of interdisciplinary performances relating voice and movement, composing music that touches the boundaries of jazz & contemporary music, and the interpretation of jazz & Latin American music. Sabrina has played at Carnegie Hall, Blues Alley Jazz, New York City Classical Guitar Society, Heckscher Theater (Museo del Barrio), Queen Sofia Institute, Martin E. Segal Theatre and Cornelia Street Cafe, among others. She has performed with the Tali Roth Trio, Pablo Aslán, Fernando Otero, Emilio Solla, David Silliman, Bakithi Kumalo, Pedro Giraudo, Quintino Cinalli, Jorge Camiruaga, Gustavo Casenave, and Don Harris, among others, and has toured in Israel, USA and Uruguay. Her project was considered of cultural interest by the Ministry of Culture and Education in Uruguay. The Folds of the Soul -her first solo album- was released in 2007, and it was nominated by the Graffiti Prize 2008 as one of the best jazz albums of the year. She was invited to sing her compositions based on the poems of Idea Vilariño at the presentation of the book Idea Vilariño: La Vida Escrita (Uruguay).
In Israel Sabrina graduated from The Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance at the Jazz Department, where she studied with Robin Capsouto, Atalia Paniel, Iris Portugali, Jean Claude Jones, and Slava Ganelin, among others. She also took part in the activities of the Movement Department at the Academy with dancers Anat Shamgar & Betty Shechter. She has played with musicians Ora Boasson-Horev, Oleg Bogod, Giori Politi, Avi Berman, Dvir Katz, Yarden Eres, Gay Meir & Judy Lewis, among many others. With these projects Sabrina played in festivals and venues as relevant as: Abu Gosh Vocal Festival, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra Association Concerts, Master Class Nebojsa Jovan Zivkovic at Jerusalem Music Centre, Kfar Blum Brazilian Music Festival, Jerusalem Prize, Chemdat Yamim Festival, Jerusalem Festival for the Arts, Rikudei Cheder Festival, Chutzot Ha-Yotzer and Chutzot Ha-yr festivals. At Rimon School of Jazz & Contemporary Music, Milestone Club, Shablul Jazz, The Confederation House, Diaspora Museum of Tel Aviv, Mormons University, Bible Land Museum, Ha´Tavach Ha´Shvedi, Wise Auditorium, Felicja Blumental Music Center, and in cooperation with The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, among many others. In Jerusalem, she taught singing and voice production at Ron Shulamit Conservatory of Music and Dance, Keshet Conservatory of Music, High School of Arts, and at her own studio.
In Montevideo Sabrina studied music and voice with Yolanda Pedemontti, Laura Baranzano and Jorge Schellemberg, and classical & contemporary dance with Ibis Longo, Ema Haberli, Contradanza, and Gustavo Collini. Sabrina has performed at Sala Verdi, Museo de Arte Precolombino, Agadu, Espacio de Arte La Colmena, Centro Cultural de España and Museo Gurvich, among others. She was a soloist in the renowned Upsala Choir of Montevideo, and was involved in collective choreography creation, participating in interdisciplinary performances with dancers and poets in a variety of festivals: Poesia Joven Festival, Integrarte2 Bienal, Tododanza Festival and Insomnia Festival.
