History of “The Mallet Band”

I’ve put together different incarnations of the “Mallet Band” over the years, beginning in the early 90’s. All the San Francisco mallet players know of each other, but we seldom get a chance to play together in an ensemble setting. The “Mallet Band” was a good excuse to hang out with my mallet pals and create music that was largely improvised and fun to listen to. (We’re also fun to watch; for some reason our audience loves to observe a bunch of knuckleheads furiously beating on large instruments.)
Most of the time we mallet players function like a “horn” player in the usual combo repertoire. What I hoped to achieve with this group was a complete infiltration of mallets in the rhythm section, even bass. To this end, we succeeded. And we also laughed a lot.
There are very strict rules to be in the “Mallet Band.” Our motto is this:
“If you can’t hit it with a mallet or a stick, you can’t be in the band!”
The musicians you hear on this recording, Tommy Kesecker, Tom Miller, and Jim Munzenrider have been core members over the years. All of the members that have passed through the “Mallet Band” have been inspiring, and we spent many a good gig with Jon Eriksen, Gerry Grosz and Piro Patton. You could be next! If you can hold four mallets and read funny little notes, your name could be here…..
I hope you enjoy “Phone Call From Barcelona”
