"I don''t think cynicism is very brave anymore," states Star Parts singer/songwriter Michael Compton. "Once you recognize the problem, then what? Do you just rehash the pain or do you aim for a little light? What''s the point of making art if you don''t believe you can make a difference, either for yourself or others?
Created in 2008, Star Parts is the latest musical project for the unapologetically positive Seattle transplant. Combining indie rock and folk in the vein of Rogue Wave or The Long Winters, Compton (along with Michelle Reeves, Jacquie Parsons and Tom Ackerman) crafts optimistic pop songs laden with melodic hooks and images of hope and salvation. "It''s about love" is his motto and this theme permeates the band''s debut EP, "What You Bleed Is What You Get."
Recorded by Ryan Hadlock (Gossip, Modest Mouse) at Bear Creek Studios in Woodinville, WA and produced by David Newton (Little Ones, Happy Hollows),"What You Bleed is What You Get" are six concise, melodic songs that traverse the themes of faith (Deep Magic) to redemption (On a Hill) utilizing Star Parts skill for economic instrumentation and arrangement. "These days I''m all about being in service to the song. I try to just let them come out and not ''steer'' them to what may or may not be cool. I understand what would make a song "hip". I understand the formulas and unconsciously they do become part of the process. But if I allow myself to be ruled by them, it would be disingenuous."
"If you are going to go out on a limb, write earnest songs and open yourself up to the kind of criticism that it brings," Compton finishes. "Is it really that big a risk if you truly believe in what you''re doing?"
