Chastity Brown is "...a roots soul singer of the first order," as noted by music critic, Jim Walsh. With her folk-jazz style, this Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter has been steadily winning over her audiences since the release of her debut album, "Do the Best You Can." Playing more than 150 dates in the past year, Chastity Brown has become known as a gospel-raised, activist poet who sings about race, love, and politics with an edgy tenderness. Her lyrics are both personal, infused with a deeply rooted spirituality, and politically, ethically hard hitting. She wrote her first song at age 15 in her home state of Tennessee and began her growing repertoire in public playing saxophone, piano, drums, and guitar. Chastity Brown is drawn to the power of music. Her fans are continually amazed at how passionately she can bring them into real life situations of overcoming struggle and then walk them out with a blues, stomp-enticing groove. In 2007, she began gigging full-time in jazz clubs, festivals, folk houses, and college campuses. She is often accompanied by Micheal X. on drums and Adam Wozniak on upright bass.

What the Media is saying:

"..melting Minneapolis with her powerful soul-jazz combo." -City Pages, March 2009
"Capturing the energy of a live performance in the studio is one of the trickiest tasks in the book, and musicians across the decades have tried — and often failed — to do so. Singer/songwriter Chastity Brown, however, makes it sound easy on her new sophomore disc, "Sankofa." The first time I heard tracks from it was via her MySpace page through tiny laptop speakers, and it sounded like Brown was sitting right next to me with her acoustic guitar and fiery songs. Raised in Knoxville, Tenn., Brown dabbles in soul, blues, gospel and even bluegrass and, quite often, brings to mind a 21st-century version of Nina Simone."
-Pioneer Press, St. Paul, MN March 2009

"Chastity Brown is one of the most exciting talents to hit the local music scene in the past year. The 25-year-old Knoxville, Tenn.-by-way-of-Claremont, N.H.-transplant has a voice and vibe that suggest an old blues woman or earth mama hell-bent on steering clear of the neo-soul ghetto that would seek to cage her. "
"...for those who appreciate songwriter-fueled jazz and a sense of organic of greatness in the making, she is nothing short of a massage therapist for the ears and soul."
-Jim Walsh, Minneapolis Star Tribune, September 2007

"By mixing a combination of folk, blues, and jazz, Brown reminds me quite a bit of one of my favorite all time artists, Odetta. Though Brown’s voice weighs lighter on the ears than Odetta’s unmistakable river-deep alto, she shares a political ideology with the “voice of the civil rights movement,” as well as a tendency to poignant and deeply intimate lyrics. While some feminist/political singers are so over the top that they turn off as many fans as they attract (Ani DiFranco for instance) Brown picks her words carefully so as to come across more as a passionate voice than a ranting ideologue." https://www.tradebit.com, March 2009

"As Chastity Brown took the stage, I suddenly imagined myself as John Cusak in that scene in High Fidelity where Marie De Salle takes the stage - it''s that moment when a really good singer songwriter first opens his or her mouth and the first word sort of rolls across the audience and everyone perceivably locks into focus - the kind of moment that makes you wish you were John Cusak in some movie falling in love (however momentarily) with some blow-you-away folk singer up there on stage. Chastity Brown scores high marks in all the Marie De Salle categories. She''s a little mysterious, a touch aloof, she''s got great hair, she plays guitar well, she plays saxophone even better, and despite nursing a sore throat on the night in question, her voice wraps you up and doesn''t let you go." -Dan O''Neil on https://www.tradebit.com, January 2009
"Raised just outside of Memphis and now residing in Minneapolis, Brown combines the best parts of her two hometowns’ musical legacies—the soulful gospel of Graceland-ville with the grittier roots of the place that produced Prince."
"This Minneapolis soul singer isn''t long for obscurity."
