Kasey Anderson''s third album, the digital-only release Way out West, is an album of ten covers by artists ranging from Bob Dylan to Arcade Fire, an idea Anderson hatched after watching the music industry undergo drastic changes over the last few years.
"I''ve been recording covers at home and emailing the songs to friends for years, but digital distribution is such a huge part of how people buy music now, I figured it was high time I did something to put my hat in the ring," says Anderson, who recorded Way Out West entirely by himself, at home, over the span of one week. "It''s about as ''solo'' as a solo record can get. I did the whole thing on my laptop in a week; vocals, guitars, keys, drum loops, whatever toy I had at my disposal. It''s a really loose, relaxed record - plenty of fuckups, for sure - but I only kept the interesting mistakes. It''s pretty lo-fi for a digital recording."
Anderson''s hope is that Way Out West will satiate fans eagerly awaiting the two albums'' worth of original material Anderson will release later this year. "I''ve got two proper records coming out later on this year," says Anderson, "but it''ll be fall at the earliest before those see the light of day, so this was something I knew I could do quickly and get out there so people remember my name."
The hardest part, Anderson says, was whittling down the expansive list of covers. "How do you choose which Bob Dylan song, or which Townes Van Zandt song? You really can''t go wrong. I just tried to choose songs I could sink my teeth into and make my own, in some way. I think it''s a cool, sloppy little record. I mean, Paul Westerberg put out, what, fifty records this year? And they''re all killer, or at least interesting. I figured I''d take my shot."
Way Out West features ten covers, drawing on several of Anderson''s influences, from Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Townes Van Zandt to an obscure Pearl Jam B-side and Anderson''s unique take on Arcade Fire and Keith Urban.
Not bad for a week''s work.
