Tumbling Down was my first production as a songwriter and recording artiste. At the time of its creation the music technology of today was not in existence, neither was there a Global Internet service. So the opportunity to produce music from a home studio and present it to an online audience for an independent artiste had not materialised for me. The most I could do was write songs using an acoustic or electric guitar and record them on to a cassette recorder. The desire to make a studio recording was pressing, but not something I could afford financially. I did however succumb to the overwhelming desire to enhance my compositions on a low budget recording; but became poorer in the knowledge that there was no such thing as a low budget recording. I employed two multi-instrumentalists, a pianist who played all keyboards’ and programmed the Linn Drum; and a guitarist who handled all the guitar and bass parts. Both had studied at the Guildhall School of Music in London and although the sounds they made were shot from the hip improvisations, as opposed to contemplating arrangements, I think we got somewhere close to a pretty decent sound. I also used an acoustic drummer on three tracks. The tracks were recorded in an eight-track studio in South London in (out of hour’s) sessions that was less costly than regular time. The metal master was cut at the famous Abbey Road studios, but the session was rescheduled because a second studio that specialised in re-mastering had not so famously managed to damage the tape; only for a few seconds but it made a noticeable difference. So they had to take it back and rectify the problem with a slight variation in sound. However the postproduction process ran into more problems so the project was shelved. I am reviving it because I have had a special request to put the original music out, as opposed to re-doing it in my home studio at my leisured pace, which I wanted to do. I thought about it and so what the hell! I thought, someone has requested it, so why not? As you may gather, this is a transfer from a vinyl LP to CD. I have tried to keep the original sound and not removed too much surface noise.
