This music on this CD was commissioned by the Old Trout Puppet Workshop for their production of The Erotic Anguish of Don Juan, which premiered on March 27, 2009 in Calgary, Canada.
After 500 years of ruminating on the spoils of his indulgent appetite for women, Don Juan’s Ghost emerges from hell to recount the events of his erotically charged life. Don Juan’s tale, told here through instrumental and choral music, reveals how terrible and wonderful, painful and pleasurable, and ultimately full of contradictions love is.
Stephen Hunt of the Calgary Herald called George Fenwick’s soundtrack for The Erotic Anguish of Don Juan “gorgeous”, while Louis B. Hobson of the Calgary Herald said it is “lushly spirited”.
The Erotic Anguish of Don Juan is the result of a collaboration between many of Calgary’s premiere musicians:

George Fenwick, composer of the music for The Erotic Anguish of Don Juan, is a free-lance composer and sometime librarian, journalist, violinist and arts administrator. A native Calgarian, he studied composition with Allan Bell and Quenten Doolittle, and received his https://www.tradebit.com from the University of Calgary in 1988.
He has been involved in the new music scene in Calgary for the past decade through his work with the Canadian Music Centre and Land’s End Chamber Ensemble. Currently, he is a member of the Spiritus Chamber Choir, and sits on the New Works Calgary board of directors.
Recent performances include The Benevolent Predator, by Land’s End Chamber Ensemble, and Fickle, by Vancouver pianist Corey Hamm. Last November the Calgary Youth Orchestra and Mount Royal Kantorei choir premiered The Splendid Line, a work commissioned for the CYO’s 50th anniversary.
Fenwick’s score for The Old Trout Puppet Workshop’s most recent production, The Erotic Anguish of Don Juan, has garnered rave reviews during its premiere in Calgary. Louis B Hobson from the Calgary Sun has called his music “lushly spirited” and Stephen Hunt of the Calgary Herald says the score is “gorgeous”.
