Amidst a modern musical landscape crowded with shiny, over-produced sounds, Zaac Pick’s debut EP Fierce Wind is a breath of fresh air. Drawing on folk, pop, and indie-rock influences, his stripped-down songs and minimalist production offer a welcome respite to those who long for music that digs a little deeper.
Fierce Wind brings us six songs that are refreshingly honest and strikingly intimate — the title is a rumination on the often wearying effects of time on relationships and ideals in today’s world. From the mandolin and percussion-driven pop of Maybelline, to the sparse strings and simple folk of My Century each track tells a story rich in ideas, imagery, and significance — and whose melodies remain long after the music stops.
Though Fierce Wind is Zaac Pick’s debut solo effort, he is no stranger to the music business. His previous band Doubting Paris spent the past six years writing, recording, and performing – from Vancouver to Copenhagen – releasing two albums and opening for well-known acts like Keane, David Usher, and Pilate Speed.
With the careful oversight of longtime friend and engineer/producer Daniel Mendez (Dashboard Confessional, Duran Duran, Doubting Paris), bed tracks were recorded live in a converted barn in suburban Vancouver, with layers of cellos, violins, guitars, and vocals overdubbed in Pick’s dining room. Among the musicians lending their sounds to the EP were all three previous Doubting Paris band-mates and Vancouver indie-folk songstress Sheree Plett — who was enlisted to add her trademark honeyed harmonies to soothe Pick’s own aged texture.
Mixed by Daniel Mendez in Dallas, TX, Fierce Wind was mastered by Ed Brooks (Death Cab for Cutie, Fleet Foxes) at RFI CD Mastering in Seattle WA, and is now available for purchase on the iTunes store and online at https://www.tradebit.com.
