I was born Don Oswald on July 14th 1975. I am a musician. Those two sentences pretty much sum up my entire existence but for the sake of the reader, I will elaborate on that a bit.
Louisville Kentucky is where I was raised and this town will always be my home. I was brought up in a family of artists and musicians. My dad was a professional musician for about forty-five years. He first put a guitar in my hands when I was too young to even remember. I have heard stories about how I would crawl over to him, climb up, and pluck the strings of his guitar as he sat and played. This was when I was just a baby... I had the itch... It was in my blood.
I was always in the company of musicians when I was a kid. As far back as I can remember there were bands playing in the basement and music equipment piled up in the house. I even remember being at some of the many shows when I was a very small child.
My first axe was a Mickey Mouse guitar with four plastic strings. To this day, I have pictures of me with it. Soon after, I graduated up to a "Dukes Of Hazzard" guitar with Bo, Luke, and Daisy proudly displayed on the front. Yet another four string, plastic, toy. By the time I was five years old I was in need of a "real" instrument.
Around 1980 my dad was busy in his music career as usual. His band was rehearsing at the church that we attended. It wasn''t uncommon for him to store his equipment in a locked room in the church in between sessions. As it turned out, there was a thief among the congregation. One night, this particular "thief" took it upon himself to rip off all of the bands gear. It was a terrible happening... but, in time it would prove to be the best thing that could have happened (for me).
You see, what happened was... The stolen equipment was insured. When the report of the gear was made, my dad listed a piece of equipment that he thought had been stolen. It was an old Fender ''Fuzz / Wha'' pedal. Somehow, that pedal surfaced. It wasn''t stolen after all. So, with the insurance money... after buying himself all new gear... he had enough left over to buy me my first real guitar.
It was a 1960''s Gibson SG. The neck was small for my young hands. It was perfect. I didn''t know much about guitars at that time. I remember thinking it was a bass when he gave it to me. That first ''real'' guitar became the start of what would rule my life forever.
I can now sit back and remember so much about what I have done with music through-out my life.
I have been in bands since I was in the fourth grade. I was raised on mostly blues and old rock ''n'' roll. In my teen years, I did venture off and play in some hard rock type bands.
Playing drums has always been another passion that I''ve taken very seriously. My first drum kit was given to me when I was 12. I have played drums in many bands over the years. Along with guitar, I also play most of the bass and drum parts on my studio recordings. However, I have stayed very loyal to my roots. The guitar.
When I was 15 I formed a local blues band called Nasty Weather Blues Band. We were together until 2001. At the age of 26, I as well as the other members were ready move on.
Over those 11 years we played every nightclub in Louisville, played festivals, concerts, and other clubs all over the region. It was a long hard ride.
During the break from the band, I began a project that is still in the works. I am spending alot of time concentrating on my original music and staying in the recording studio. I am putting together a recorded archive of my original music. It ranges from Blues, heavy rock, all the way to some very progressive rock, and fusion. It will turn out to be many albums worth of music.
These efforts include an album by myself and former Nasty Weather bassist Mike Standefer. He and I have been writing progressive rock music (on the side) for nearly sixteen years. That music sparked a new project after the breakup of Nasty Weather. He and I are the "brainchild" of a wonderful progressive metal band called "SUNWARP". We have written a double album of some amazing and complex material. We have no doubt that true music lovers will really dig this new record. Louisville can definitely look forward to some brand new CD''s and some new tunes in the very near future.
Sunwarp is also the name of my recording studio and indie label. Producing and engineering is my other great passion.
Playing live with a band has always been my passion. The blues was my first true love. The guitar has always been my right hand. Lead guitar was and always will be my forte''. Yet, in 2005, I became the bass player for Dr. Don & The Love Dogs. Dr. Don was my father and The Love Dogs was his band.
I began picking up the bass (like every other guitarist) within my first few years of playing. When it came time for Johnny ''X'' (a Love Dog of 16 years) to leave the Love Dogs in 2005, I was first in line for the job. That was a great time until the sudden passing of my dad in 2005.
“Dog Creek Daddio” is my latest release. It consists of 17 great tunes that range from blistering guitar driven blues and some dirty funk… all the way to a bit of country and classic rock. There’s even a cool little Cajun ditty on the album. A guaranteed, fun listen for any music lover.
Half the songs are my own originals and half are my dad’s old tunes that I rerecorded. A tribute so to speak. I am the main band on the album. I performed all the guitars, drums, and most of the bass tracks. The lead vocals are my doing as well. There are some great players on the record playing Hammond organ, percussion, harmonica, ukulele, and singing backing vocals. Do yourself a favor and pick up a few dozen copies!
