"A few years back when I was in college, a group of friends and I went to a little storefront church in Queens. The service was wonderful. The praise and worship was high. After the sermon, the pastor called me out saying he had a word from God for me. Never knowing me or even my profession, he told me that in all of my future success and all of my accomplishments, do not forget God. At first, I was a bit defensive. I thought, How could that happen? Im a gospel singer! And no sooner had the thought completed itself before he explained that even the most dedicated gospel singer can put the gift before the giver. He said that in order for any of my success to matter, God would need to get the glory FIRST and that my only job was to allow Him to lead me on the path to that success. That is what I believe to be the origin of A-natural."
A-natural is not just a stage name for gospel singer James Aaron Foster. Its a lifestyle. The meaning behind it speaks volumes. In musical notation, a natural sign brings a note that was either flat or sharp back to its original key. A-natural applies this simple concept to his own life with the notion that when we stray off the path God has given us, Christ is the natural sign that brings us back to where were supposed to be.
Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, raised in other parts of New Jersey as well as Roanoke, VA, and cultivated in places like Ohio, New York, and California, A-naturals music is deeply rooted in his upbringing and his various surroundings. With a jazz singing mother, and a guitarist/cartoonist father, he grew up with numerous musical influences stemming from funk to rock to R&B to classical to gospel and to jazz. These all contributed to his debut self-titled album released in 2004 and led to his self-owned and operated production company Beat Switch Productions which released its first ever compilation project in the summer of 2005.
With the release of his second solo gospel album, Refocus, A-natural hopes to send out a message of clarity with this new set of material. The songs contained on the album all elude to a reawakening not only of our spiritual selves, but a reawakening to who God really is and the power of Jesus love in our lives. What A-natural calls his most personal composition, the album touches on various everyday subjects that we wouldnt normally talk about, but in a non-intrusive way. His main purpose with these songs is to cause the listener to automatically see themselves in the words as well as applying the principles of victory to their own lives, all while showing the love of Jesus through every lyric.
A-natural hopes for this year to be not only a successful year as an artist, but also a life-changing year for his listeners. As said before, this album is his most personal. But he also believes that the power in the God-given lyrics will break down barriers and strongholds and ultimately bring many people to know the true love of God.
