Details:
I was six years old when I picked up a guitar; I was
six and a half when I quit. There was one chord that
frustrated me to no end and it was another eight
months before I was willing to try again. I held on to
that second try through childhood, playing with my
Dad’s pedals and recording into a mini-cassette player
I borrowed from my mom. I entered my teen years and
played electric guitar in a band; we worshipped noise
and uncomfortable sounds and when that band
disintegrated, I found an acoustic guitar, a bunch of
other instruments, and my own sound with a more folk
like twist. I recorded a couple of albums in a couple
of years; I operated on the principle that if none of
my tools sounded professional, I would emphasize that
handicap. After high school I left my small New York
suburb for a small college town upstate. I got lost
there, and when I returned for the summer I decided I
wouldn’t go back. I finished out the next semester,
moved to New York City, and began playing shows. My
most recent album “Uprooted” was recorded in my tiny
new apartment, which might explain the claustrophobic
feeling of my new songs."
